There is almost a total absence of pottery chips, henee jt is supposed, these houses were @efensive works, On the mesa a few hundread yards southwest of these ruins are located several large pueblos, All, or nearly all, of the mounds have been opened by vandals ana much excellent pottery destroyed by their. careless digging. Without a doubt, if the present laws coulda have been enforced fift een years ago, Utah might now possess a limitless collec- tion of pottery Mr, some in the Kidder the finest historical world, asserts that the pottery here is raore varied than that of the Mesa Verde district, but of less excellence in workmanship. Pieces of skeletons are to be found about the excavated portions of the district. On Alkall point, which lies between Montezuma and Alkali canyons are many more fine ruins, Work of Vandals Byident, early. Wednesday morning the party continued the journey. Several fine pucblo and cliff? ruins were examined and their dimensions taken. The deplorable work of vandals was apparent again today when several fine yessels, badly broken but complete, were found among the debris, At one large ruin a hole, five feet in diameter, and twenty feet in depth, extended - perpendicularly through one of the molnds, Whether this cavity was dug by pottery hunters or not ts unknown, and its purpose is likewise a mystery, At one of the ruins Mr, Kidder ditscovered, among the debris upturned by pry thieves, two human. jaw bones joth were bones of the lower jaw and it Is curfons that both were found at the same ruin. The larger, evidently that of an elderly person, continued but five teeth situated In the front of the mouth, There had been no other teeth on the lower jaw. All five tusks were in place and had heen worn through the nerves, which were plainly visible. The back parts of the bone were somewhat worn as if the back teeth of the upper jaw had than usual. The second bone was that of a ehild and very heavily built. The width of the jaw wa also very marked A double row of teeth surrounded the jaw and each tooth was wider than the average molar. All of the teeth were worn very short It was impossible to find the upper part of e ither ot the skulls ednesday evening the party camped at Cap and Ball Springs, in reality all alkalj{ seep. Reliet Parties Confused. Thursday morning Prof. Cummings and the guide visited some ruins in the nelenborhood while the rest-of party reproduced some pottery desiens and completed several maps. Two of the riding horses slipped besa hobbles and tock to parts un . An Incident that proved itifercetive to the party occurred during the ORY Fifteen minutes after] left camp ceeren appeared. Another member of e party was detailed to intercept the Fnide before the latter had become familiar with the professor's tracks. After vainly wandering about among the dense cedars for some time, this second aete was met bs a third party, who announced that he had found the cause of the difficulty. The de of the cedar trees together sameness of the country had a great deal to do in confusing the difrerent reHer parties, Friday morning we moved camp whose horses Kidder and Lockhart escaped, undertook to walk: the distance next camp Noon was spent at the head of Teustler's canyon, where fully eight acres of ruins aygait examination, In the afternoon camp was moved to Mr. Hambeltoen's ranch in lower Alkali canyon, Seme of th finest clit ruins seen on the whole trip are to be found near this camp While examining a kiva yy cere monial chamber, -rof Cummings found the side of a wooden vessel oneeighth of an inch in thickness. <Although so thin, the bowl had been constructed of two separate pleces of wood The outside was of oak while the inside was lined with the bark of the white birch tree. Sunday, June 21, the journey was resumed, Loekhart end Kidder riding two of Hambelton's horses The route lies straight down Alkali te Montezuma and then up The dryness of the country is surprising Scarcely a drop of water in the whole canyon and not a bit of feed Big Cave a Mystery, We passed an excellent group of ruins near the Bluff City-Cortez road The group consisted of several large blu®& pueblos and a square tower. An immense cave extended into the hill from the foot of the tower, Without a doubt the cave was caused by water yet it had been used as an abode DANISIE SISTERHOOD. as the walls and ceiling were well smoke-stained. Tuesday morning the party proceeded up Montezuma and lunched at its junction with Coal Bed canyon, where an immense island bluff {s entirely covered with ruins A row of mono- liths, from five to seven feet in height, guard, possibly, the ruins of the ancient temples. The character of tne ruin made it a likely place for excavation, but there is an entire absence of grass and water After much deliberation, Prof. Cummings and Mr. Kidder decide that the most favorable place for work this summer would be the ruins of Alkali ridge Accordingly Mr. Hs umbé lton went to Cortez to secure men While the remainder of the party proceeded to Monticello, where fresh provisions will be secured, Sunday afterncon the two factions of the party will reunite at Cave Spring and work will begin immediately upon the ruins of that locality. It is highly probable that fully live we cen will be consumed in this -excavatior Although the site of the summer's work been changed, the society has te is not withdrawn its invitation to its friends to visit the ruins while tho work {s in progress. Possibly the best way to reach the locality is to-take train as far as Thompson Spring. From there take stage to Moab, where horses can be secured for Monticello.
