Show Inter-Mlountain Republican VOLUME IX, NUMBER 46. SALT TEN PAGES. LAKE CITY, UTAH, SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1908. PRICE FIVE CENTS. ALDRIGH BILL 15 MEXICO SHAKEN SHOULD UTAH ADOPT PROHIBITION? PASSED BY SENATE BY EARTHQUAKE La Follette Successful in Getting Two Important Amendments Through. While some sort of federal law for the regulation or prohibition of the liquor traffic is dreamed of by a few of the opponents of the American saloon as it exists today, more people are in favor of more immediate action by state, county and municipality. It is for the latter that the recently organized State AntiSaloon league is working Dean Benjamin Brewster of St. Mark's cathedral, Protestant Episcopal, is a member of the executive committee of the Anti-Saloon league. Dean Brewster said yesterday: Disastrous Fire Follows Disturbance, Destroying Town of Chilapa. "In responce to your request for an opinion, | would premise that the question of prohibition, as a matter of practical legislation, is, of course, distinct from the question of personal temperance. For it ought to be admitted, on the one hand, that many people are temperate in regard to alcoholic liquors, without finding it necessary to abstain wholly from their use as beverages. And, on the other hand, it ought to be granted that society has the right to protect the victims (and they are a vast multitude) of the indiscriminate sale of intoxicants. "The American saloon, speaking generally, is not an institution which sane upholders of personal liberty can afford to defend. The great principle of personal liberty should not be jeopardized by a false alliance with a social abomination. "If prohibition is taken to mean the attempt to abolish absolutely the manufacture and sale of alcoholic liquors, | do not believe that such a policy is practicable in Utah or anywhere else. And, in fact, before attempting any plan of state prohibition, it would seem to be wise to make trial of local option. The saloon is just one cf those subjects on which the principle of home rule should be invoked. sentiment, within each community, ought to be aroused to recognize its own responsibility. fective working cf any law, in this matter, will always depend upon the strength of this focal sentiment. "Hence, the policy of local option, is to be preferred, | think, tO any sweeping prohibitory law. Whether general prohibition may eventually be the solution, is a question for the future to decide. But, in any case, the educative effect of a local option law will be wholesome."
