Show Gus Backman Cites C Of C Duties In Address Here A record crowd was on hand Monday evening to hear the challenge chal-lenge issued by speaker of the eve-ning eve-ning Gus Backman, secretary of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce, to build an all-powerful organization during 1941 through organization and cooperation. The meeting was the annual banquet and business session of the Preston Chamber of Commerce. Backman pulled no punches when he assailed what he termed "poor financial support" of the Preston C. of C. He charged Die organization organiza-tion with the task of representing every phase of community lile, naming at least nine objectives th.it the local organization should incorporate incor-porate in their aims. (1) Promote Preston as the "capital" "cap-ital" of the area. (2) Development oC water resources. re-sources. (3) Oppose aicts contrary to best interests of agriculture. (4) Attempt to obtain manufacturers manufac-turers of farm products. (5) Cooperate with soil conservation conserva-tion program. (6) Conduct an active highway program. (7) Develop recreational aveas. (8) Advertise fop tourists. (9) Pre. note civic celebrations. "Organization without cooperation coopera-tion is no organization at all," Backman charged, adding that to become effective it would be necessary neces-sary to have complete financial support plus the cooperation of every ev-ery merchant, "Advertise,, for every business and every community is built around advertising," he stated, o n At the annual meeting Monday u evening, retiring President T. R. Bowden gave a report on the activities ac-tivities during 1940, pointing out that inadequate finance had placed the 1940 chamber under a severe ' handicap. He urged a more vigorous vigo-rous campaign in 1941 with "every businessman a member" as a prime objective. Til his report President Bowden reviewed some ot the 1940 activities activi-ties which included the re-estab-iishment of a CCC camp on Cub river, assistance in the renovation r of the Opera House as a recreation- i al center, the night rodeo and horse show, the Idaho Semi-pro baseball touruey, improvements on the rodeo grounds and grandstands, and start of coi uction on the Preston-Grace highway. He also urged completion of improvements on the Strawberry road as a necessary nec-essary promotion, during thin y:nr as well as the highway sign program pro-gram to obtain additional tourist j ; travel through this community. Homer Johnson presented the 1940 Junior Chumber of Commerce award for outslandiugi achievement to Ariel Meek who recency received receiv-ed the Americun Farmer degree In , FFA work.
