H Redford and presented Tuesday night under the auspices of the Parowan Stake Priesthood Priesthood Priesthood Priest Priest- hood Quorums was enthusiastically received by an appreciative audience audlene which filled the public school auditorium to overflowing Tine The play which Was was recently written by Mr Redford to fulfill the thesis requirement for a Maiter's Masters Master's Mai- Mai ter's degree decree at the University of Iowa is based on historical fact and manages to catch and reflect the grandeur in the great sweeping tide of the Mormon people as they sought to build a spiritual and economic empire where they could worship and work as their God directed It was especially appropriate appropriate appropriate for a Pioneer Day celebration celebration celebration tion because it t depicted that perIod period period per per- iod of Utah history which covers the first ten years In the struggle by Brigham Young and his followers follow follow- ers to found the Mormon empire and brought pol poignantly home to everyone who witnessed the play the hardships and obstacles overcome overcome over over- come by those hardy pioneers pioneer Mr Redford is to be congratulated on the excellence of his play for white It is primarily a historical drama he has managed to make It ex exceedingly exceedingly exceedingly ex- ex interesting and has made of It a gripping fast moving picture pic plc- I ture tore of those years of struggle William H H. Manning who portrayed portrayed portrayed por por- the part of Brigham Young gave an outstanding performance and merits merl high praise for the distinctive manner in which he handled this part His makeup was exceptionally good and that together with his fine line acting act- act ing created the illusion that Brigham Brigham Brigham Brig- Brig ham Young himself was on the stage All the other members of the cast turned in exceedingly fine performances and are to be praised for the way in which they lived I their parts which Indicated that much time and thought had been spent by each and everyone in perfecting perfecting per- per feeling his interpretation of the character he was to portray One of the outstanding factors which contributed to the success of the play was the superb makeup work done by Austin Dalley Dailey Mr Dalley had attempted to make the characters resemble memble picture of the various leaders and succeeded far beyond even even his highest hopes we know The make up of Brigham Young and Heber C C. Kimball was especially fine as was that of theother theother the theother other and much to add to the atmosphere of the scenes Members of the Priesthood Quorums who sponsored the play are to be congratulated on bringing such a splendid and appropriate drama to the people of Cedar City and It is hoped that members of the surrounding communities will also have an opportunity to witness it as it is distinctly a Utah play for Utah audiences and manages manages manages man man- ages to bring very forcibly to the attention of the descendants of those early Mormon pioneers the great heritage passed on to them to enjoy in this mountain empire |
