Show THE TIE TRUTH ABOUT CEDAR CITY T MS TAXES The front page article in the last las t Issue of the Parowan Times appearing under the title FOR MEDITATION BY CEDAR CITIZENS dealing with the tax burden in Cedar City and more particularly with the collection of Special Improvement taxes called forth so much comment that an in investigation investigation investigation in- in was made at the office of the City Treasurer Miss Gardner to determine the facts and they ate are given here The article in question contains the statement that during the past week the City was forced to sell out the property of ot 17 11 out of a list of 26 28 promInent prominent prominent prom prom- citizens because they were unable unable un U able to pay the tax and so advised the City office by telephone and that 85 notices to delinquents in another r district had been mailed out and Cit City y feared a large number would woul d go unpaid In the first district referred to Paving Pl Extension No 3 there are arc 14 0 accounts Of this number were e I paid on or before the delinquency date and 26 remained unpaid and were advertised In the Iron County Record to be sold for taxes Belore the date of sale 17 of the 26 28 were paid lea leaving Ing only 9 0 of the c- c counts sold for the special Improvement improve Improve- ment tax Of the 9 that were sold two accounts were tied up in estates of deceased 4 persons two belonged to persons out of town to who ho possibly did not the notices sent out from the Treasur- Treasur el ers er's office and two others belonged to the i name ame person so 60 there were Wre in reality only four Individuals unable to i pay the tax out of a total of ac ac- ac counts I In the other district referred to Paving Extension No 4 there are accounts Of the total were paid on or before the due date and the 8 85 notices referred to were reminders to others that there remained thirty days in which to pay the tax before the property would be advertised for sale A good many of these have been paid now and it is expected that a ty will ill be taken up before the date of sale ale It was found on investigation that the payments on this district for this year range in amounts from 1000 to with a few as high as the average being about 2000 For a consideration of that amount there are very few people in Cedar City who will be sold out of their home |
