thirty five to forty miles per hour all the train men from conductors down to the lowest whom we came in contact with were wen very polite and courteous courte oni and they all seemed to take much delight in looking after the wants and comfort of the patrons who travel over the old od and Te reliable liable union pacific road while traveling through wyoming and nebraska we observed some immense stock farms and very extensive fields of corn and other gram grain which seemed seemed to be growing very rapidly the thousands of cattle and sheep which could be seen in every direction were in in a very tery fine condition condi tiou our train arrived in omaha on Saum saturday day evening promptly on time and upon alighting from ae ane tram we were greeted by mr whittaker who has charge of the utah exhibit we were somewhat surprised in coming in contact at that particular time tim e with any one who had ever heird heard of our publication orits or its editor sunday morning the sun rose bright and dear and it was extremely y warm and when we had secured a pass pan to admit us to the trans mississippi exposition grounds we boarded the street car which runs raw from the center of the city to the main entrance of the exposition grounds in less than fifteen minutes thedro the grounds are modeled modele dafter after those of the worlds pair fair in fact the similarity is so great that those who were fortunate enough to witness the worlds fair can easily detect the same style of architect archi tec tm ture band and the artistic arrangement odthe ground sat the grest great trans management and in addition handsome state buildings have been constructed by the states of nebraska iowa illinois minnesota wisconsin georgia montana and arkansas and thirty six states and territories are participating and exhibiting specimens of all their various va rions products the nebraska state building deserves special mention it is w i on the ionic style of architecture there are two grand entrances emphasized by pediments sediments ments embellished with statuary and the grand seal real of the state the interior of the building is decorated in a most lavish and costly manner the various reception rooms as well as the large and magnificent assembly room are elegantly furnished and all visitors mn can experience much comfort while resting in the reception rooms or while lounging in comfortable rockers and other easy chairs which are scattered throughout the entire building the walls of the building are adorned with hundreds of very rare and costly oil pastel and water color paintings which cannot be surpassed in any section of the country these paintings 0 3 are all of original designs and they are the productions of artists residing in the state of nebraska the united states government building is a very imposing structure it is i arranged in three sections it has a frontage of feet on the lagoon and feet in depth the main entrance is is reached by a broad flight of steps and richly tinted with all the beautiful colors colon of the rainbow A colossal gold enamelled enamel led dome towers far above all the other great buildings and a figure representing liberty enlightening the world stands on the top of the dolney dome which will be illuminated by electricity and the torch will be feet above the ground the total length of the government building including the two wings is a trifle over feet and the exhibit consists of coins post age stamps relics from the smithsonian institution and the national museum as well as other exhibits too numerous to mention agriculture building is filled with all the products of the farm and exhibit in that building will be very creditable indeed when it is completed horticulture building contains a great gnit variety of rare and beautiful flowers andaloft and lofty y palm trees towering many feet skyward and delicate ferns can be seen in great profusion throughout the he building Califor Cali and nov lat in familiarizing themselves with the minin mining 9 resources of our state every Utah nian should feel proud proad of this exhibit and they should urge their friends far and near to visit the mines tand mining building president L W shurtliff is deserving of much credit for the untiring efforts which he has put forth in order to have utah properly represented president shurtliff was highly pleased to meet mrs taylor and on the exposition grounds and expressed his regret that we were unable to remain longer than what we did he commended the broad ax upon the enterprise which it displayed in endeavoring to convey to its many rea readers ers a faint idea of the grandeur and magnitude of this great exposition the fine arts building contains a numerous co collection 11 ec t io n of pa paintings r t in 99 and sculpture by prominent artists from all portions of the world and all persons possessing taste and refinement can devote several days in studying this collection of paintings the administration arch the boys and girls building the auditorium dit the manufacturers building the arch of the spaces the machinery and electricity building the apiary building the liberal arts building and many others are worthy of special mention but owing to our oar limited space we cannot elaborate upon them and we can only y say that no one can appreciate or conceive of the won aeiful displays which can be observed in the last mentioned buildings unless they themselves can inspect the same with their own eyes the negro race will be represented in the educational department of missouri lou lon V stephens governor of that rock ribbed democratic state was broad minded enough to appoint negro degro commissioners who act in conjunction 4 with their white associates in collecting and arranging the exhibits of that state no other governor in the union has conferred similar honors upon any member of our race and the work which these negro commissioners have performed will shed lustre upon them and upon all the worthy and enterprising members of the race throughout the union the midway contains over loo 10 buildings wherein will be depre J dented all the nations of the earth there can be seen the foreign ail vil lages which present picturesque types of architecture the the indian the german the irish the greek gidek the spaniard the italian the
