Show What About These Political Rumors 0 A I number of readers politically inclined are arc constantly asking us 1114 what the situation is along that line In our effort to find something something something some some- thing substantial to write about we get only rumors and then tome home more rumors It is iR rumored that from the Fifth Firth Judicial standpoint the democrats are arc not worrying about when the convention will be called and neither are arc they worrying as to the outcome and who will be the standard bearer on the judicial ticket It is rumored that the democrats claim that it is a forgone conclusion that this is a democratic year so 80 why worry unnecessarily But ut on the other hand there are arc rumors galore among the republican ranks among them being that the Republican convention convention con con- for nomination of or judge for the fifth judicial district has been Leen arbitrarily set Bet for the of or July to convene at Milford and that the delegates will be apportioned among the counties on the basis of or the vote cast for Judge Burton Durton four years ago While there can be no particular objection to the date and place of the convention we rise up to ask as do a number of vitally interested citizens of or this and Washington counties who the decided these matters as a judicial committee and when and antl where was the meeting held in which the date and place was decided upon Echo answers Who 1 We find upon inquiry and somewhat to our surprise that the judiciary committee of the district Is as follows Juab Count County Dennis Wood chairman and James Garrett Beaver County Countr Stanley secretary and G George orge Jefferson Millard County County Coun Coun- ty Clark Collister Iron Count County John P. P Fuller Washington County Samuel Judd How comes it that there are arc two committeemen in Juab and Beaver Deaver counties and one each for Millard Iron and Washington counties Some here if Ir this be true but as we said it is but rumor It has always s 's been our understanding that each county in the district in the committee meeting should have one vote and ONLY one while under this apparent line up unless the committee refuses re reo re- re fuses to allow the chairman and secretary to vote at the meeting the two counties having two committeemen will hold a majority against the wishes of the majority of the counties of or the district and in spite of or the fact that these two counties at both the Smoot and the Maybe elections gave the Republican party the lowest majorities in the district On the face of or this rumor it would seem that Juab and Beaver expects to dominate the matter of or the convention and run the business to suit themselves But even if fC the unfair line up is granted we still are wondering wondering wonder wonder- ing when this rumored meeting of the committee was held and where We are reliably informed that neither the Iron County nor the Washington county committeemen has been notified of or the meeting Can it be possible that the four committeemen from the two counties favorable to Judge Burtons Burton's candidacy have already al al- ready met and decided these matters We can hardly bring ourselves our our- selves to believe that such a thing has transpired The apportionment of or the delegates on the basis of or the Burton vote would be most unfair and American un-American on at least three grounds In the first place the Burton vote is not the theote vote ote cast at the last general election eJection The election eJection of Senator Smoot two years ears ago is the last general election whereas Judge Burton ran four years ears ago two years before the Smoot election In the second place such an apportionment would tend to encourage en en- courage a vicious practice of or perpetuating a man in office Counties Coun Coun- ties favorable to a candidate cast a heavy vote for him and counties coun coun- ties unfavorable to him a light vote The party's concern is to elect the candidate nominated and the committee must strenuously avoid any appearance of attempting to perpetuate one person in office orfice In the third place the apportionment on the Burton vote disfranchises dis dis- franchises ever every count county in the district except Juab Burtons Burton's own count county normally democratic who only when the home boy was running gave anything like substantial republican majority As between the Burton and the Smoot vote tho the gain and loss to the respective counties in the district based upon the apportionment apportion apportion- ment of one delegate to each votes is as follows Smoot Burton Loss Gain Juab County 15 17 2 Millard 1 County 21 16 5 Beaver Deaver Count County D 9 7 2 Iron County 14 t 11 3 Washington County 15 8 7 Under the rumored unfair Burton apportionment there will be no loss of strength in the Burton candidacy Juab Count County absorbing absorb absorb- ing the loss in Beaver Heaver c county while at the same time fifteen I delegates from good republican counties are arbitrarily disfranchised dis l franchised from voting for the candidate the they prefer This candidate can can- I may be Judge Burton himself We dont don't know But why the 15 good republican delegates Is there any danger danger in allowing them to vote 1 The foundation of or American politics is representation Why throttle it We cannot but feel that the rumors circulated are without foundation and that the committee meeting will be regularly called call call- ed and each of the counties in the district will be represented by its committeemen with its customary apportionment of one vote for each county as the ethics of politics demand and the apportionment apportionment of delegates to the judicial convention made import on the basis of the votes cast at the last general election eJection as the law pro pro- vides But two committeemen for Juab and Beaver er counties as against one for each of or the other three counties in the district gets our goat and we rise to ask how does docs this happen |
