influence was being used in that direction but bat when the final result was announced and when it was surmised that the hon george Q cannon had decided to become a candidate for the united states senate the editor of the tribune removed his unclean night aj I 1 cap and threw up his hands in holy horror and he proclaimed to all the world that it would be the greatest calamity which could be inflicted upon the state to elect president talt cannon to the united states senate as it would be self m evident ident that church influence had been used in order to accomplish that result the tribune continued to throw hot shot inte the 6 sides of mr cannon until thit that gentleman was compelled to relinquish nil all his hopes of going 0 to te them the united I 1 states senate in favora entire tire satisfaction of over six million freemen that senator cannon was totally and ancl utterly unfamiliar with some of the great leaders of the democratic party A great many gentlemen have declared that they ar are still estill in favor of continuing to Cann onize the united states senate because senator cannon happened to disagree with the leaders of hii hi party on one proposition only but we beg to differ with all who ma may y entertain such erroneous ideas when senator sanator cannon entered into the contract with the people he did it upon the express understanding that on all occasions he would endeavor to champion the cause of free silver and if he has honestly and conscientiously fulfilled his part of the contract then he has simply carried out the trust which was put upon him by the people of utah and therefore they are not under the slightest obligations to return him to the united states senate unless they feel dis posed to do so we are unselfish enough to admit that it did require some courage upon the part of senator cannon to sever his connection with those whom he was associated with i in the st louis convention nv en tion and we tire are further willing to admit that sen senator ator cannon is a brilliant orator but he is not a logician or a profound thinker and at the same time we want it distinctly understood that there is a number of true and loyal democrats within the confines of our great commonwealth who would have withdrawn and severed their connection with the democratic party in case that party had bad declared against free silver at the chicago convention in 1896 when senator cannon returned to utah he urged all those who called themselves free silver republicans public ans to refrain from uniting or fusing with the free silver democrats I 1 now it if it was entirely wrong for republicans I 1 to unite with the democrats in this state in 1896 then in our opinion it is absolutely wron wrong 9 for the tree free silver democrats to unite with those who call them themselves selm free silver republicans in 1898 but there is no such thin thing 9 as a iree silver republican licza if anyone any one is honestly in
