an organ recital at the tabernacle supplied with necessary requirements and sent on over the Jordon into a vast st sparsely selY populated wilderness What then will be their impression s a whole and what to say sayto to fellow tr travelers whom they meet or to the folks at home It will be something to the effect that Salt Lake is a fine little city located in the American desert but what in th the world supports it they the tourists do not kno know v. v On the other hand if directed over ver the southern route these tourists would get a proper impression of the state and would quickly appreciate its importance to the nation as a whole Th They y would see to their right and left as they traveled onward toward I our southern majestic mountains within the confines of which are unlimited deposits of practically all of the precious metals They would see and be told of busy mining camps whereat where where- at thousands of workmen ar are daily Jaily bringing these valuable metals to the surface They would see smoke emerging from mammoth chimneys of plants where they are undergoing refinements Preparatory pre Pre- to being sent forth for the further uses of mankind They would hear the rumble of machinery and beh behold ld the he firey flares of the furnaces of a great plant that crushes and tend melts into pig the pro products of one of the nations nation's largest iron deposits They would see passing before them mile long trains from end to end with ith coal from fields of a capacity to meet the demands of the world for years to come Then every few miles they would come to attractive little cities and towns surrounded with green fields beautiful gardens and orchards the trees of which are bounteously with fruit unsurpassed unsurpassed unsurpassed passed in richness and flavor Within these cities and t towns reside reside reside re re- side thousands of people who will extend the hand of good fellowship fellowship fellowship fellow fellow- ship and mysterious canyons of I unbelievable depths of oth other r circled lakes the ice icey icer waters of which afford aiford the st fishing imaginable and t to great forests of pine and cedars wherein is will willbe be interested to an extent that will c call for for a st stay y weeks of perhaps months Then returning to their homes where ever they may may be they will have become animated advertisements of the state its resources and possibilities It is hard to ju just t how hw t the e businessmen of Salt Lake can reconcile them themselves elves to toa a situation of this kind They send their theirs salesmen n down own to sell us goods Broods they induce the railroads to put on cheap rat rates s in order to coax us s to the metropolis to spend our money they pat us on the the back bac at elect election on time they solicit us for for- funds to further their various undertakings and what not riot It should be plainly evident to them them that that out Q of every dollar expended by tourists in Southern Utah seventy-five seventy per celt of it event eventually ally finds its way back to Salt Lake In fact we have it hand handed d to us from every angle and t thus us far we have apparently apparently ap ap- been made to like it Patience however is rapidly ceasing ceasing ceasing ceas ceas- ing to be a virtue and something must be done to effect a change The Auto Club of Southern California every thing considered has done more toward the development of this part of the state than has Mr 1 much touted organization tion The businessmen business business- men of Los Angeles are offering us every inducement to give trade to that city There is but little difference in the freight rate and but a days day's difference in time In many instances prices better and nothing short of our natural patriotism for our are arc own state state and its in institutions has kept us of late late from responding respond respond- ing inc to these overtures Perhaps it would complacently on while this man and his organization exert every effort toward other communities than their own thou art indeed a jewel There is no excuse for a condition of or this kind whatever The roads through the south are in the best of condition as demonstrated demonstrated demon demon- by the fact that automobiles leaving Salt Lake on the morning of one day may easily rea reach h Los Angeles during the evening of the second day Irrespective of this Mr as mouth piece of the road committee of the chamber of commerce looses no opportunity to criticise ise the state road commission and ridiculous as this may seem it is even now hinted that he aspires by contemplated legislative action to succeed that very capable body in the handling of the state road department Consider this as a joke if you wish to but at the same time keep an eye on Bill To the people of the state as a whole this matter is becoming serious To 10 the people of the center and southern part of the state it has already become unbearable and will not be tolerated I much longer If Mr cannot be shown by his fellow townsmen towns men that he is jeopardizing the b business siness interests of the state it will be up to the towns and cities effected to pool their interests and seek seck those fields where their patronage will be appreciated Think it over |
