Show MARK HANNA feb 20 william warner wamer secretary of the united mine workers union said to the world correspondent today that the miners of the pittsburg district are actually destitute he has a list of thirty families who are dependent on the panhandle mine of M A hanna co of cleveland who were really starving he reported their names to the poor overseers overseen and they were assisted even when working he says mr hannas hannahs miners cannot earn sufficient to feed their families the hanna company of which mark A hauna hanna is the active head forced on its miners this week an ironclad iron clad contract which they could either sign and work or remain idle and starve the miners are compelled to work at the reduced rate of sixty cents per ton for one year ten per cent is retained by the company for the faithful observance of every provision of the contract to be paid to the miner when the contract matures one thing about it said secretary warner who gave all the foregoing information is that the contract never matures if a man wants to quit the employ of the company he must give thirty days notice and no more than five men can have withdrawal notices in at anyone any one time if a man wants to quit and there are five men ahead of him he must wait shift thirty y days before he can give notice and thirty more before he is released no man can stand this and if one quits he loses the 10 per cent that the company has retained it does not amount amount to much in any one ease case but with men it aggregates considerable to the company mr hanna has introduced the ironclad iron clad contract at his panhandle mine where I 1 had a list of thirty families that were starving the men had to sign it lowthe now the mines owned by other cleveland operators are going to adopt similar measures to compel their men to work at the hanna mine the men are allowed to put in only half time and the little work given them will not allow them to average seventy five cents per day just imagine a man with a family living on that especially ally after he pays 7 a month for half of a shanty to shelter his hia family and which costs only to build 1 I do not believe the miners minere condition was ever worse and we are going to see if we can get the state to investigate exchange we can truth truthfully fally say in reference to the treatment which the republican leader is dealing out to his employed emp loyes that it is of the same tenor as that which is and will be accorded to all employed emp loyes of those republicans who profess so much love for the working men hannas heart swells with pity and generosity as he looks at the poor working man the pauper labor of europe seems to him to be the worst curse with which mankind is afflicted hanna and his co protectionists projectionists would build a tariff wall around the united states so that the laborer may become independent mr hanna the laborer of old europe may maj well be envied by the laborer oi of new america when we consider the fact that our industries are still in their infancy H hanna a and his gang cry protection I 1 to home industries and manufactures fac tures by this they me mean the capitalists who control the industries and ancl factories W we e say sav protect p ro hect the hand that labors in the factory reward the arm that will toils the laborer is worthy of his hire is a truth which even the great mum marcus A hanna hama has failed to io learn leam hanna his has I 1 learned A how brer that charity arit y be begins at at home nsf is aw an atif 7 4 W 1 z 0 V |
