Show S A KENNER AND THE democratic PARTY DURING the campaign of 1895 5 the great campaign made its appearance pe po arance and hon 8 A kenners name was em blazoned on its editorial page as editor and publisher and it cut a very wide swathe during that campaign and a majority of all the democratic candidates as well as a majority of the P republican candidates labored under the erroneous impression that unless their handsome pictures graced its columns and unless they had extensive write ups in the same varying in prices from ten to twenty five dollars each they would all be defeated at that election the proprietor of the great campaign according to the published report of chairman 0 W powers received a monetary consideration for a great many copies of his paper and for publishing the democratic state county and city tickets we began publishing the broad ax on the day of august 1895 and from the ath day of september to the ath day of november 1895 we published the state county and city tickets which occupied an entire colome in our little paper without receiving the slightest compensation for the space it occupied ane and in addition thereto we distributed during that campaign thousands and thousands of free copies of the broad ax throughout the state for the purpose of aiding and assisting the democratic cause during daring that campaign according to the same report which we referred to the democratic committee paid the provo dispatch dispatch one thousand dollars the price advocate one hundred dollars the salt lake labor world one hundred and thirty five dollars and the great campaign received about the same amount and three or four other papers received from seventy five to a hundred and twenty five dollars each and it is a singular coincidence that all of these mush roon papers whose editors and proprietors received a monetary consideration for publishing the ticket and for hollering and shout ing for democracy suspended their publications immediately after the close of that campaign but bat the broad ax has never missed an issue since we began its publication and it has loyally sup ported all the democratic nominees during that time notwithstanding the fact that some of its successful candidates were so penurious that they were not even willing to subscribe for the broad ax or to compensate us for the sp space ace which their name occupied in its editorial columns the great campaign resurrected itself from the ruins of its former wreck for the purpose of taking an active part in the camp campaign aien aign of 1896 and to secure patronage from both the dem democratic and republican candidates candidate 4 and the democratic party Jip honored nored its editor by electing him state legislature and during the campaign of 1896 the great caan caln campaign a ign and ancl the argus I 1 the deseret evening news aws the ST salt lake herald anderen and even that negro hitting hating sheet the salt lake tribune received a monetary consideration for the work which they performed for the democratic party but the broad ax received no recognition from the hands of the state committee the great campaign flourished and blossomed like a green bay tree duringS the great senatorial contest J but it suspended immediately after the adjournment of the legislature it reappeared in time to take an active part in the campaign which has just closed its columbo were gain again illustrated with beautiful cuts of the var various i ous candidates and its ts editor was again honored by the democratic party by bein being 6 belue selected ted as a delegate to the ward convention and as a delegate to the city convention and its distinguished editor grew very much excited while he was en engaged a ed in denouncing M 6 all those who were connected with the nonpartisan non partisan movement and after the democratic city ticket was completed it was inserted in in full in the columns of the great campaign im right up until its last issue issue prior to the election but at that time for some cause or other the democratic city ticket was dropped from its columns and the great nonpartisan non partisan ticket was inserted in lieu thereof we have no desire to criticise criticism critic ise the actions of the hon SA S A kenner but we believe that inasmuch as the democratic party has honored him on a number of occasions that it would have been eminently proper and just on his part to have continued to publish the ticket of the party which has always honored him in the past |
