Show AN explanation of the most ardent admirers ers and supporters of the hon W H king have personally chastised and criticized us for the course which we have pursued in relation to that gentleman during the theares pres ent senatorial contest in order not to pace ourselves in a false light or position we take the liberty on this occasion to set forth a few facts respecting the question involved vol ved before proceeding however we desire to say that the broad ax unselfishly and very loyally supported judge king for congress in 1896 without receiving one dollar from any source whatever but we believe from the bottom of our oar heart that he be appreciated the support which we rendered him for he has forwarded to us many government documents which we have always duly acknowledged through the columns of the broad ax at chis this time we vp desire to further state that whatever the result of the present contest may be we shall always entertain a high opinion for the present member of congress coming up to the county convention of september 1898 the writer was a candidate for legislative honors bafo before re that convention which was acknowledged to be under the absolute control of those who were favorable to judge kings kines candidacy dacy for the united S states tates se senate n ate 0 our ar vote r ran an up to and at the aug suggestion of one of the judges friends we called upon him early on saturday morning to ascertain if he be could not speak to a few of his managers in our behalf but he could not consistently do so Is 0 aud and the result was that our vote dropped from down to 13 and EL B shepard esq and several se e ral other gentlemen were nominated but notwithstanding this fact when the election was over we wb continued to defend judge king through the columns column of our publication from the attacks of those who claimed that he was responsible for the roberts agitation because became he would not accept the in order to verify this statement we refer our readers to the broad ax of dec 3 1898 prior to jan 14 1899 1890 whenever we had any occasion to elaborate upon the prospective senatorial candidates we instinctively gave judge king the most conspicuous mention in our paper but several days prior to the appearance of our editorial of san jan lath we called upon judge kin king at his headquarters in the Knut knutsford aford for the purpose of reading to him the said editorial but he being absent we read it to his brother S A who seemed very much displeased because can e we had mentioned A W mccunas McCune Mc Cunes strong sides in favor i ol oi himself and while it might be 1 true that we would lose some sup porters a and subscribers by pursuing such a course in time we would gain new ones to take the place of the old we assured the judge then and there that our sympathies were with him but so far no man in or out of the democratic party in this state nor in any other state could dictate to us how to write editorials As we have before stated it was our earnest and honest intention of being on friendly terms with the three leading democratic candidates I 1 and to verify this assertion ass the following quotation is from our issue of jim jan which was wag prior to the Ul balloting lating for U united 2 states senator the members of the legislature CATI can make no mistake by permitting the senatorial merits of the three gentlemen and divided up the space equally among them but this was unsatisfactory to the enemies and opponents of mr mccune and we were between the ahe devil and the deep sea
