Show UTAH SCHOOLS WIN I NATIONAL HONORS 00 Salt Lake City Sept It n.-It 17 It will willbe willbe willbe be pleasing news t to the schools of Utah to know that the work of the boys and girls in the M Modern dern Health alth Crusade has again won won tot lot Utah national honors Word has just been heen received from New York that Utah is the only State in the West to capture capture capture cap cap- ture two of the much prized banners which are awarded by the National Tuberculosis each year for exceptional health work in the schools The efforts of the Utah Public Health Association to accomplish accomplish accomplish this commenced three years ears ago when for the first time Utah entered en en- ered what is known as the National Tournament Last year ear pennants were warded seventeen of Utah Utah's schools who had competed with schools entered from every other state but the crowning event has been the wining of the National banners When it is remembered that there rae only eleven of these trophies awarded award award- ed each year in the entire United States it should make every boy and girl feel much encouraged because to capture these awards they must do almost perfect work The dall daily records of health chores kept by the children for the year have to be sent to New York where they are passed upon by a 11 and carefully scrutinized The Tho two schools winning these National National Na Na- I banners are the Riverton School Salt Lake County Miss Metta Metta Met Met- ta Carter teacher and the Central School Heber City Miss Venola Ohl Ohl- wiler teacher Utah is the only state tate west of Iowa who captured any of these banners In addition to this high honor the following schools were wea National Na Na- ional pennants for exceptionally fine health work vork on A School Avon Olga Gibbons teacher Charleston School Charleston Charleson Charles Charles- ton on Clarence Probst Sherman School Salt Lake Cit City Mrs S. H Wa Wallis executive of the Utah Public Health Association it will justify its existence Children who every day observe e the eleven simple health rules re wired by this system tem of health education on have them then well fixed in their lives by the eni end jf of f their school year ear We had over oler ten thousand children who did this work v last year This year ear because of the fact that the work is to l he be e carried on in the third fourth ant and fifth grades as well as in the sixth will see at least of our boys bOYI and md girls girla enrolled as Modern Health Crusaders They must practice ever every everyday day ia the following simple hea heath hearth th habits ha- ha bits oits which are called chores Brush Drush teeth night and morning sleep ten hours with windows open take ten deep breaths every morning drink four glasses of water each dB day go to toilet every morning at a regular regular regular reg reg- ular time keep pencils and fingers and other unclean things out out of mouth wash hands before each meal protect others when the they cough or sneeze by ala alaways ways carrying a handkerchief hand hand- kerchief wash face neck and arms and keep fingernails clean dean take a aleast at least two full baths every week exercise exercise ex ex- in the open air at least one hour eat some cereal at breakfast and two kinds of vegetables each day dan sit and stand erect drink no tea coffee coffee coffee cof cof- fee or other harmful drinks chew food lood thoroughly be cheerful clean minded and Our efforts must not relax until we have enrolled every boy and girl girlin in this wonderful program of health To secure the best results the work must be well supervised and proper instruction given the teachers for carrying on the work successfully Mr Wallis is engaged in attending teachers teacher's Institutes for the purpose of explaining and stimulating this work throughout the State and is ready to give talks on the subject us far as his hb time will permit 00 |
