Show A REVIEW WHILE we were engaged in conversation with one of the members of the democratic state committee a few days ago the gentleman gendeman intimated or was rather of the impression that it was a lack of good judgment on our part to cr criticism criticise critic iti cise ise i the actions of the democratic state committee after their former chairman had wrote the letter which appeared in the columns of the broad ax a short time ago the gentleman also insinuated or was of the opinion that we only advocated the principles of democracy for a monetary i consideration be that as it may but in order to disabuse the minds of those who may entertain the same ideas or opinions we will review as briefly as possible our efforts in behalf tf democracy since we have resided in this grand and magnificent new state of utah we began the publication of the broad ax on august the 1895 and on wednesday night september the ath of the same year we appeared before the members of the democratic cratic c state committee while the they v were in session at the reed chotei hotel and informed the gentlemen to the effect that it was our intention to send a copy of the broad ax am gratuitously each week to every colored voter throughout utah during the campaign and we also informed the members of the committee that we would esteem it a great favor if they would send to our address the names of all the colored men who resided in their respective cities and towns we promised them then and there that if they would comply to our request we would make an extraordinary effort in trying to win our people over to our party a copy of our little journal jo in addition to donating hundreds and hundreds of copies of the BROAD ax to the members of our race we contributed each week during the campaign of 95 one hundred copies to the democratic state and county headquarters fifty copies copie s to the ladies democratic committee fifty copies to the utah board of labor fifty copies to the scandinavian democratic club fifty copies to the united Working mens democratic club and twenty copies to aaron johnson chairman of the mapleton precinct committee and furthermore ther more we published the state city and county tickets from the ath day of september 1895 to the 2nd and day of november without receiving any any compensation for the same at the same time 1 according to the report of the committee they paid or caused to be paid L the sum sam of one thousand dollars to the provo prove dispatch one hundred and thirty five dollars to the labor world one hundred dollars dollan to the price advocate and many of the other little mushroom papers received from fifty to one hundred dollars for advocating democracy during the latter part of october 1895 we called upon the chairman of the state com committee cittee with a view of trying to get the committee to render a little financial assistance an istance towards helping to defray the expenses of the banquet and reception which we intended to give but but we were informed by the cha chairman irmal that the committee could not render ary any assistance ce simply because they did not have any money on hand to expend in that directions but in spite apte of au all the obstacle acle which we had to contend with we ave the banquet and an rep reception eption on ss w s s s ass friday evening november the 1st ast 1895 and delivered our address entitled the new democracy during the campaign of 1896 the tribune the herald the argus 1 the deseret news and many other papers received various sums of in money 0 ne y for publishing the state stat e ticket but we carried the ticket free and sent one hundred copies of the broad ax each week during the great political struggle to our old chicago friend W H clark esq secretary of the colored mens national democratic league |
