Show A PEANUT STAND Did it ever occur to you that the merchant who says he doesn't believe in advertising, is profiting by advertising adver-tising just the same? lie puts in a stock of goods and most of the things on his shelves are advertised goods. He can't buy a stock of goods that doesn't contain a large portion of articles ar-ticles that are advertised by the makers, and if he could buy goods that are not advertised he' wouldn't do it, says the Laingsburg (Mich.) Press. In addition to this, if he is a live merchant, he wouldn't locate in a town where nobody advertised. He couldn't afford to. If he doesn't advertise, ad-vertise, he at least wants the other merchants to advertise and get folks coining to town so that he can share in the business after they get there. Tie may not be aware that be has reasoned it out in this way but that is really what it all amounts to. The smallest business enterprise in a town feels that it has a good reason rea-son for being there, and if it is filling a need in the community it should be willing and anxious to tell the people peo-ple about it in a manner proper to the size of that business, and larger business enterprises in proportion. From what we have observed of advertising ad-vertising and its results, says the Cassopolis Viligant, we would not attempt at-tempt to run a peanut stand without advertising. We would sell the best peanuts obtainable and then we would proceed to tell the public all about it, for telling the public about your busi-iipss busi-iipss is all there is to advertising. The burden of advertising in most towns falls upon a few merchants and the rest of them profit by it to some extent at least. This is hardly a fair proportion as everyone will readily admit, and it is an indication that most public spirited and unselfish merchants are those who advertise. They arc generally the same fellows whose names are found near the top of every subscription list for a public benefit of any kind, and they are the fellows who keep the town "on the maj)." Don't think that this matter of advertising ad-vertising the town doesn't affect you personally, for it surely does. Without advertising of any kind for just one year, property values in that town j would shrink, for business would de-i de-i crease and decreased business would mean less labor, and less labor would mean more empty houses in town and a poorer market for locally grown produce. We believe you will agree with us by this time that the advertiser is an important factor in any community, commun-ity, so let's all "take our hats off" to the men and women who are advertising ad-vertising their business and let us show them by our acts that we appreciate ap-preciate what they are doing. |
