Show Herbert Hoover Elected By Tremendous Majority In a battle of votes never before in the United States, Herbert Hoover, republican nominee for the presidency was swept into office at Tuesday's election el-ection His total in the electoral college, col-lege, is now placed at about 450, 1S4 surplus of the number for a choice. Expectations of the most conservative republican leaders were litterally smashed and the democrats, who wero really counting on the victory of their candidate, Governor Smith, failed to solve the mystery and were completely dumbfounded. As early as 11 o'clock Tuesday n'ght, eastern time, indications indica-tions pointed to Smith's defeat, and as returns from various parts of the country began to pour in, Hoover's lead grew fast. Shortly after 11 o'clock, when the millions of votea had been counted, Smith saw his doom and radioed a message to Herbert Hoover, extending his congratulations on the latter's success and wishing him a successful administration. Hoover staged something no other presidential candidate ever accoin-pl'shed. accoin-pl'shed. He invaded the south, through strong democratic barricades and carried car-ried Florida. He broke into Virginia, winning that state by a safe margin. Virginia had been in the democratic columns since the reconstruction period per-iod and the victory of Hoover in that stronghold of democracy, is regarded as a miracle. Tennessee, another democratic dem-ocratic stronghold, yielded to the republicans re-publicans and added to Hoover's vast majority, and Smith's home state, New York, gave Hoover the majority.
