After lingering in the '"cellar" for league standing in the Sanpete-Nephi-Salina league for a few days, the Gunnison Gun-nison lads emerged from the low point and took a standing in the fifth place in the column by defeating the Fairview ball team at last Sunday's combat. Fairview was sent home carrying car-rying only seven scores, while the locals lo-cals had doubled that amount, winning win-ning with a total of fourteen runs. It was one of the tightest games for a few innings played on the local diamond dia-mond this season and only for the clever ball tossing of Gunnison's favorite, fav-orite, WTaldo Villard, the results may have been different. Larson started on the mound for Gunnison and carried car-ried the game to the fifth inning with Fairview leading by a score of seven to six. At this point Villard took the pitching position, and the visitors were unable to "locate" the nifty pitcher's curves and were un-ble un-ble to score any more runs. Gunnison added eight more runs from the fifth to the close. Following is the score by innings: Fairview 140 00 000 7 Gunnison 102 323 30x 14 Summary: Runs M. Madsen 2, Peterson, G. Madsen, Day 2, R. Next Sunday afternoon Gunnison's ball team will go to Salina where a regular league game will be played. This bout will be the only card for that day and it is expected that fans from Nephi, Fairview, Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant and all the surrounding villages vil-lages will crowd to the Salina ball park. No finished game has yet been played between the two rival teams and some "hot" stuff is expected. Salina Sal-ina and Gunnison met at Gunnison June 16, but the game was called in the first of the fifth inning on account of rain. The postponed game is scheduled sche-duled for the afternoon of July 4th, on the Gunnison diamond. The game will be called at one o'clock sharp, and following fol-lowing this session Gunnison will go to Salina to play an exhibition game. |
