Show by Arthur Brisbane 31g Steel on the Pacific Mob Psychology Earth and the Senate Ford's Contribution BIG news was the announcement by the United States Steel Corporation Corpora-tion that It had purchased the Columbia Colum-bia Steel Corporation, biggest organl eatlon of its kind on the Pacifio Coast It is important news for the steel Industry, and particularly important to? California, and all the Pacific Coast States, when the biggest steel concern In the world hitherto confined con-fined to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Gary and Birmingham, Alabama, reaches Into the Great West, moving from the Atlantic At-lantic to the Pacific The purchase of the Columbia Company, Com-pany, with its annual capacity of 340,-000 340,-000 gross tons of steel Ingots, shows the wisdom of modern industry. Under antiquated methods Big Steel would have moved to the Pacific Pa-cific to fight Columbia Steel and "try to put It out of business." Instead the power and intelligence of the Big Steel Company, directed by Chairman Myron C. Taylor, and President Far-rell, Far-rell, will be concentrated on making steel, not devoted to fighting somebody some-body else or paying doubly for a double overhead. Mines In Utah will supply ore for United States Steel Pacific Coast plants for the present. Later hydro-electric power from the Columbia River may take the place of coal, If the steel experts develop, as they hope to do, steel production by electricity, which will mean a saving of heat, and production of pure steel of a quality hitherto never made in quantities of the "pure iron" of the Damascus blade. You will be glad to hear that the Federal Reserve Board says the Wall Street earthquake Is over, public fears calmed. It may be permissible to remark therefore while the earthquake is still ' fresh in many minds, that gambling Is And It Isn't necessary. There are S other better ways of making a living In the United States. In addition to which gambling is no way to make a living. Washington says stock market difficulties dif-ficulties are due to "mob psychology." j They are due to the fact that 20,000,- ! 000 people started gambling all at once and the same 20,000,000 tried to sell stocks ail at once. The condition in Wall Street is like that following the cry of "fire" in a theater. Soon a good many millions will wish they had remained quietly la their seats, refusing to be stampeded. stam-peded. Those that foolishly talk about a national pai-ic, will please remember that the income of this Nation is one hundred billion dollars a year, j All that the people may lose now In the stock market they can pay for In a year or two if they will stop gambling and save some money. j The earth turns on its axis about 1,000 miles an hour, 25,000 miles in twenty-four hours. Because of its size, the earth's motion Is slow. At the same comparative rate of speed, you could not detect any motion mo-tion in a cart wheel, revolving once in twenty-four hours. j i However, as President Hoover justly complains, there is something slower, and that's the Senate's motion mo-tion on the tariff. ! It has been considering a tariff bill, as the President says, "since June, with fifteen sehedules to work out, and has not yet completed schedule sched-ule 1." Edsel Ford announces reductions In Ford prices, expressing the belief of the Ford organization, that "basically, the Industry and business of the country are sound." j There Is no better contribution to prosperity than to give buyers more for their money, when greater efficiency effi-ciency makes that possible. It Isn't how much money you get, but what you get for your money that counts. i ! Two more great oil fields have been found, one in Texas, one in Kan- sas. And It Is called "a misfortune harmful to the price of oil stocks." I It ought to mean general satisfaction, satisfac-tion, proving the limitless wealth o! this country. Unfortunately, oil companies com-panies and government combined ; have not learned to protect oil resources re-sources and prevent criminal waste, j What engineers call "the nearest approach to a nothing but wing" plane Is shown in Germany. Tailless shaped like an arrow, it has a propeller propel-ler that pushes, one 8-horsepower mo tor, and goes 78 miles an hour. To learn to run this plane Is easy, only 1 'o0 to -40 feet needed for a take-ofl j and vertical rudders act as brakes iu I landing. j I ! This rlare, revolutionizing air : j plane construction according to com- petent engineers, costs only J800 : ! Tens of thousands could be sold in J this country.
