Show A Carload mf Chinaman. A telegram received here today from Ban Antonio, Tex., says: The Southern Pacific passenger train from New Orleans this morning contained one car of curious curi-ous freight. In an ordinary emigrant coach, attached to the rear sleeper, were thirty-nine Chinamen, en route to China. TTiey came from Havana, Cuba, where they were employed in a cigar factory. On their arrival by steamer at New Orleans, Or-leans, the government officials forbade their landing until it was explained that they merely desired to go across the territory ter-ritory of the United States to San Francisco, Fran-cisco, where they had engaged passage to the flowery kingdom. The Southern Pacific company was compelled to give the government officials a bond of $250 for each of the Mongolian paasengera be fore they were permitted to board th. train. The bond was security that none of the Chinamen should escape from the train en route. The railroad company had the train strongly guarded, and the .Chinamen are not allowed to leave the coach on any pretext, being compelled to eat and sleep in tbe car. Denver Special. |
