Show Wounded Robber Improves at Provo It took Gunnison "sleuths" six hours to ran down the bandits that attempted to loot the Gunnison Valley Val-ley bank last Thursday morning, when three "yeggs" blasted the vault door twice and then made an attempt to get away. Within thirty hours after af-ter the attempt, the men were safely within the custody of officers, the story had been printed to the world, the News getting: the first story t the public, repairs had been made at the bank, all adjustments made and the banking: institution was doing business. But the incidents leading-up leading-up to the capture and all, had some tunny incidents. John Bryant, nc 50-year-old safecracker, who was an- pi-ehended with the bunch, and who was accidentally shot when being disarmed, dis-armed, is going to "make the grad'" in so far as his wound is concerned. This was the advice received froi.i the Aird hospital afa Provo, a few days after Bryant had been taken there. The bullet which went whizzing whiz-zing through Bryant's body, punctured punctur-ed a lone intestine, after coming out at the back. Fortunately, the bullet missed the bones, and only for this, different results may have followed. In the bunch taken, were John Bryant, Bry-ant, George Dwyer, alias Frank Anderson, An-derson, and G. H. Bauer, all about 50 years of age. Dwyer has been ident ified i-fied as one of the bandits that robbed rob-bed the Moroni bank several years ago. When Sheriff Sanderson was taking fingterprintis 'of the yeggs, Dwyer pulled a stunt that brought laughter. He made pretenses that he was ignorant as to what to do and it j was difficult to geti the impression.-;. When Sheriff Sanderson pulled i.he man's photo and an impression of his fingers, which had been on file at the sheriff's office, Dwyer grar -fully submitted and the impression of the fingers was again secured. Quizzinz by the officers and County Attorney Edwards has led the latter t,o believe that all three men have records in other states and that all ; are "gangsters" to the fullest extent. I While nothing of value, other than the revolver stolen and which was recovered, re-covered, was taken from the bank, it is thought the men were seeking the safety deposit boxes. Their location of this vault was incorrect and the attempt was made on the vault where only records and tihe books are kept. The boys who took part in the man hunt, especially from Gunnison, declare de-clare they are through with running down robbers. There were severnl thrills before the robbers were finally fin-ally nabbed, and so "fidgity" were some of the searchers that they fairly fair-ly shook. And well they might, when several shots were fired during the (Continued on Inst page) WOUNDED ROBBER IMPROVES AT PROVO (Continued from page 1) surrounding of the fugitives in the haystack. A deputy sheriff of Juab county, when approaching the haystack, hay-stack, accidentally discharged his sawed-off shotgun. Nothing like this was on the program and when the gun resounded, fingers were on every trigger of every gun in the searching party. No unusual alarm was occasioned occa-sioned when an officer fired a shot into the haystack to route the "yeggs." Another unannounced shot, however, and one that again caused "shaky" knees, was when the revolver revol-ver being taken away from Bryant was accidentally discharged. The "fright" was only momentarily and soon after, the three men were hustled hustl-ed into waiting cars and hurried to Nephi. Bryant was taken to Provo for treatment, and Sheriff Sanderson and deputies took tjie other two to Manti, where they were locked in the county jail. No preliminary hearing has been held as yet, and it is likely the matter will be postponed until Bryant is able to appear before the i court. , I |
