Show National Automobile Head ! Says Scenery Too Far Off Regrettable That Wonders are Inacces-ible Inacces-ible to Tourists Salt Lake Club To Hear Protestants Saturday. "Telling continually of the beauties beau-ties of Southern Utah, has a bad effect ef-fect on the minds of eastern people. They think of the south being a great distance away, and come to the conclusion that Southern Utah is too far away for them to visit. Furthermore, Fur-thermore, Utah has beauties in other oth-er parts of the state which are equally worth while visiting. It is important, therefore, that no sectional sec-tional references be made .in advertising." adver-tising." This is aquotation from an address made by Ernest N. Smith, general manager of the American Automobile association, before the Chamber of Commerce of Salt Lake City the first of this week. In a letter addressed to the writer and dated October 20, at Washington, Washing-ton, D. C, headquarters for the A. A. A., from Mr. Smith, the following follow-ing is quoted, showing the variance of attitude: "I have just had the pleasure of reading your editorial of October 7th, headed, 'Dastardly Attempt Made to 'Kill' Utah Scenery.' I assume as-sume by this time that you have received re-ceived copy of the letter which the writer has sent to the Provo Herald, which will indicate to you gentlemen in Southern Utah that this is an or- deplores the fact that it is so far away. If the contentions between the A. A. A. and the Automobile Association As-sociation of Southern California, through failure of efforts of the former to force the latter into Its membership, is the "big" stick in the road, then Southern Utah ti to suffer suf-fer very materially, as its issue in the fight is being made a big ocs," and its effect will be widespread. Unfortunately Salt Lake and the northern sections are reasonably far away from the wonderful gardens of the south. But Southern Utah residents resi-dents and southern interests are not. The citizens of this section are putting put-ting forth every effort to build the entire state, and particularly the southern part. And to do this erery effoi-t is being made to keep the opportunities op-portunities alive, notwithstanding the fact that certain Salt Lake ri-erests ri-erests would crush us into obliv'ra. j Southern Utah has a trans-co'.'.ti-! nental highway the Pikes jpa.ik Ocean to Ocean highway passing j through, and by it hundreds of thoa- sands of tourists from nil psrt.'j of I the United States are enablad ii j cross the country and without any I additional effort or travel can view the grendeur. Salt Lakers can, and ganization that has the friendliest feeling for Southern Utah, and which recognizes the tremendous asset which you have in the scenery in your part of the state. "You have already been made aware of the fact that the head cf our National Touring Bureau and myself have just completed a tour of Southern Utah, and with all my knowledge of beauty spots in America, Amer-ica, I was overwhelmed with the scenic advantages which you have. No words of mine can adequately convey my feeling as to the beauties which your country reveals, and we shall take ample opportunity to call it to tha attention of our members in all parts of the United States. "It is most unfortunate that the Provo Herald was imposed upon by some unscrupulous person who gave them information which borders very close on libel. We realize that the information was given by someone j who is trying to stir up the good people of Southern Utah in an unnecessary un-necessary way, and in addition to the copy of the letter sent to the Provo Herald, we are taking the lib- erty of writing you this special let-j let-j ter, which you may use in any pub-j pub-j lie way that you wish. I "Southern Utah need not call the j bluff, so far as the world's greatest I motor federation is concerned. South- ern Utah does not need to bluff, j What she needs is help in calling to j should see it in the same light, and i thousands passing through the capital capi-tal city can easily be directed southward. south-ward. It looks as though the Wendover interests, headed by the enemy of j the southern part of Utah, bill rishel, i and the scrap between the A. A. A. and the Automobile Association of Southern California, would soon bloom in a real fight. If it terminates termi-nates in this, then Southern U1t:li will make an effort to have the Salt I Lake Chamber of Commerce, divide honors, and see that Southern Utah I is not discriminated against. The citizenry of the south are sick and ' tired of the continual "knocking" land time is to be called mighty.' ' quick. I The attitude of the Utah S'atc Automobile association, particulaily ! the head of the association, and th-i th-i er influences that have been brought ! to bear, has resulted, as anticipated, j in the matter being brought to an ! issue for an "ironing out" proposi-i proposi-i tion, Saturday and before the cham-! cham-! bbr of commerce at Salt Lake City, v j lepresentatives from all the Lionv ! clubs, commercial clubs, civic organizations organ-izations including Provo and south, will meet with the members of the chamber of commerce at Salt Lake j and some real data is to be presented, present-ed, showing that the southern interests inter-ests are being discriminated against. I A program has been prepared by the the attention of the motoring world the scenic advantages which she has to offer. This Association will assist as-sist in that pleasant task, and if you have any specific ideas as to how that can be done, we shall be glad to hear from you and add your Ideas to those we have already worked out" It looks as though Southern Utah and the wonderful scenery to be found here and farther south, is "bottled," so to speak. In one breath Mr. Smith lauds, and, the next he "defensive" and documentary evidence, evi-dence, as well as evidence of firsthand first-hand will be given. Gunnison will likely have a representative, repre-sentative, and Salina, Richfield, Marysvale, Tanguitch and other sections sec-tions south, and Manti, Ephraim, Nc-phi, Nc-phi, Mt. Pleasant and towns in Utah county will go "heeled" with "kicks" that will be ju.st ami which will unquestionably un-questionably result in the Salt Lake i business men giving the southern j representatives an impartial hear-, hear-, ing. |
