Show Warning Sounded To "Jaywalkers" "Jaywalking" and coasting on the main highway in the center of thi city is a dangerous pastime and unless un-less students and children are more careful and pay more heed to the state and city laws, serious happen ings will result. Notwithstanding the many warnings sounded by the city officers and others who woub safeguard the children against accidents, acci-dents, little. or no heed is given am the streets are used for coasting am as sidewalks. "Coasting or using sleds on the Main street will have to be stopped,' said Mayor Christiansen. . "Parents and children have been told time ane time- again of the dangers in using the streets in the busy sections as t playground. If no heed is yiven the warnings then drastic steps will have to be taken and if necessary arrests will-follow." Another nuisance that is " being practiced, the mayor stated, was the fact that the high school students some at least, use the highway when walking to and from the high school building. Some are most defiant and disrepard the signals given by auto-ists auto-ists to clear the way. It is prohibitive pro-hibitive to use the main highway a; a sidewalk when a suitable walk i? provided, and the law violators not only endanger their lives but may be subject to arrest. The matter should be an easy one to adjust if only common sense and good judgment is exercised. In other communities safety 'plays an essential essen-tial part in schools. It is being taught and practiced and is resulting result-ing not only in an education, but safeguards the lives of children and adults. Parents are asked to teach safety among their children and the . school heads are also asked to coop-! erate. Thus far Gunnison has-been! fortunate, but the conditions cannot ; continue if the present practices of , children and students are kept up. I |
