The United States has prepared a sharp note to Great Britain denouncing the attitude of the latter government In expelling two American consuls from Newcastle, New-castle, England, it was learned Friday. Fri-day. The note, signed by Secretary of State Hughes, takes no trouble to conceal the displeasure of the American Amer-ican government at the stand taken by Great Britain in connection with her action some months ago in canceling can-celing the exequaturs, or recognition recogni-tion of the United States consuls at Newcastle. It is understood that Secretary of State Hughes shortly will publish the American note, making plain the extreme annoyance and displeasure of this government. The Newcastle incident has caused an unusual amount of fricton between be-tween the two governments. The present sharp note results from a reply recently received from Great Britain flatly refusing a request re-quest by the United States that the British government withdraw the charges against the American consuls. con-suls. An investigation by this government gov-ernment had found these charges baseless. The charges were that the American Amer-ican representatives In question, Consul Fred C. Slater and Vice Consul Russell SI. Brooks, bad used their official positions to coerce British subjects coming to the United Unit-ed States to sail on American shipping ship-ping board vessels. |
