Show Auto Penetrates Wilds of Canyon Fred Erickson, one of the enthusiasts enthusi-asts in opening the Twelve Mile canyon can-yon for a public camping and playgrounds play-grounds for the residents of Gunnison Gunni-son valley, has won the distinction of driving the first automobile up over the new road as far as it has been extended. The road is now complete as far as the old Sorenson water mill and Mr. Erickson drove his car up to that point last week, making the trip with comparative ease. The Sorenson water mill is some five miles up the right hand forks of the famous canyon and the announcement announce-ment of the completion of the auto road to that point is greeted with delight de-light from thousands throughout the valley. Long has the Twelve Mile canyon been noted for its grandeur and beauty, and when the government govern-ment announced that it would apply ap-ply two dollars to every one subscribed sub-scribed by the citizens of the valley towards completing the road farther up the canyon, the response from the residents was liberal and through this medium Gunnison valley has added a valuable asset to its scenic attractions. It is proposed to go farther with the road and while it may not be completed much further this season a campaign has already been started to do considerable more work the coming season. Those who appreciate the value of the wonderful canyon as a convenient con-venient place to spend a few days with 30 little expense and at such, a close distance to Gunnison and the valley towns are enthusiastic over what has been accomplished this season sea-son and with those who will be converted con-verted to the same ideas after a visit there is little doubt that the road next year will be completed so that automobiles will be able to penetrate the scenic parts without very little trouble. |
