Show Greek Cynics. The Cynics were a sect of Grecian philosophers, founded by Antlsthenes about 300 E. C. The Cynics were noted for their morose and gloomy views of life; for their disregard of p" sciences, save that of morality; an for their contempt for the ordinary conventionalities convention-alities of life. The word cynic is derived de-rived either from Cynosarges, the place where Artlsthenes taught ; or from Na vinos (Gr., doglike), in allusion allu-sion to the snarling or surly manner affected by the philosophers of this school. To Diogenes of Sinope, the most distinguished disciple of Antlsthenes, Antls-thenes, the Athenians erected a column col-umn of Parian marble surmounted by a dog. |
