Show TO GUARD WORKERS' HEALTH National Board to Supervise Conditions Condi-tions in Plants Working on War Contracts, Is Urged. A health conservation board, corresponding corre-sponding to the general muni (ions board announced by the council of national na-tional defense, is imperatively needed to supervise health conditions in government gov-ernment plants and to co-operate with similar state boards in the regulation of private plants under contract with the government. Dr. Frederick Martin Mar-tin of the council of national defense Is thoroughly qualified to head such an organization, says the New Republic. No labor laws should be suspended or riodified except after investigation and approval by this body of experts. Indeed, In-deed, it would be to the best interest of the nation if the government could be persuaded to make minimum standards stand-ards of hours, wages and shop conditions condi-tions integral parts of all munition contracts. In war time the workers will be willing to forego comforts and to work nearer the margin of physical exhaustion than iu times of peace, but the country cannot affoud the extravagance extrav-agance of paying for work done (luring , incapacity from fatigue or the further extravagance of urging armies of workmen work-men toward relative incapacity by neglect neg-lect of proved physiological law. |
