Show A Saxon-French Cigar Lighter. Several years ago the then new minister min-ister of France, M. Klotz, decided to Impose n tax of two francs, or 40. cents American money, on each cjgnr lighter used In that country. The reason rea-son for this is that the sale of matches in France is in the hands of the government gov-ernment monopoly and the portable lighters interfered with the sale of the matches. On the other hand the matches have become so bad in quality that they are subject of complaint and ridicule. The law has become unpopular unpopu-lar and there is an effort now being made to have the order rescinded. Notwithstanding Not-withstanding the fact that an increased in-creased tax was placed on tobacco by-the by-the French government several years ago, it has caused a tendency to increase in-crease smoking nnd that is proven by the many smokers to be seen in public places and thoroughfares. |
