Show CULTIVATION IS GREAT NEED It Keeps Weeds Down and Al'ows Air to Pass Through Soil Have Bake and Hoe Handy, (Prepared by the United States Department Depart-ment of Agriculture.) A well cultivated gardui produces the best crops, both quality and quantity quan-tity considered. In fact icarden crops will not give good result unless the soli Is kept cultivated. Cultivation is not Intended primarily to kill weeds, although this Is lmpi rtant, but to loosen the surface and et air into the soil so as to provide a, more congenial environment for the poofs of tho plants. Plants In soli Vhich Is too wet turn yellow and if ii'it relieved by proper cultivation and drainage, languish lan-guish and die. Too much water In the soil dilutes the soj solution, impedes im-pedes the formation of nltrnte, destroys de-stroys desirable soil organisms and permits the development of undesirable undesir-able ones. Soli which has been too wet, If allowed allow-ed to dry and bake, offers an environment environ-ment as uncongenial for plants as when too wet. Either extreme, therefore, should be guarded against. If the home garden Is located near the kitchen door, the hoe and rake can be kept conveniently near so that odd moments cau be spent In cultivating. |
