Show MANGEL BEETS FOR POULTRY Succulence Acts as Tonic and Provides Pro-vides Water, One of Essential Requirements of Ration. For strong egg production plenty oi succulence in poultry feed is required. By succulence is meant a food material mate-rial which contains the original vegetable vege-table juices of the plant as it grew; for example, cabbage, lettuce, sprout ed oats, mangel beets, etc. Succulence, Succu-lence, as here defined, has two definite purposes to perform in the ration: It acts as a tonic, increasing the food consumption by having a definite effect ef-fect upon the palatability of the ration; ra-tion; where plenty of green food ie given, the birds relish the food bettei and digest more. Succulence also pro vides plenty of water, which is one of the essential requirements of a ration. Mangel beets have peculiar advan tages as succulence carriers. They are very succulent, containing approximately approxi-mately 75 per cent of water. Mangels are generally fed by cutting cut-ting in half, lengthwise. The halves can then be nailed to the wall (the cul side out) with 20-penny spikes, about a foot from the floor. This keeps the food clean. Mangel beets are essentially a win. ter feed, and should be fed in such as amount that the poultry will clear them up each day; if greater quanti ties are given, there will be waste Some poultrymen grind the beets in a vegetable cutter, and feed them in at open wooden trough. This method admits of ihe birds eating the entire beet, but on the other hand it requirei considerable labor. Farm Journal. |
