Show WANTED, A SUGAR FACTORY. By O. Nemo. TLat a beet sugar factory is desirable desir-able in a community, is conceded by 11. Its benefit inures most largely to the farmers ia its immediate locality, local-ity, it being Tery valuable crop, yielding from $35 to $75 per acre net if all labor is hired, and about double those figures if the labor is performed by the farmer. It is not only a paying crop, but the existence of a faotory in the neigh-borhood neigh-borhood affords cheap and nutritious nutri-tious food for cattle, hogs and sheep, in the form of pulp; a food which is available In the early fall and wiuter, and which possesses great fattening properties. Whenever a farmer can demon' Mrate beet land, it become3 worth at least $200 per acre ; such is the case at least ia numerous other localities. It does not impoverish ihe soil like many other crop?, but renders it more fertile and .cleaner for varied cultivation cultiva-tion These are some of the advantages advan-tages of beet culture and of a near-by faotory, and ought to interest every progressive farmer in Gunnison val ley. But, the only way a sugar beet factory can' be built in any community, commu-nity, is by showing that the farmers can and will raise beets. No person or company will ever undertake the srection of such a factory unless assured as-sured that sufficient beets will be produced to run it for a period of about four months. Such plants are quite expensive aud the promoters, naturally, must be satisfied that the raw material will be forthcoming. Now, if the farmers of this valley really desire a sugar factory, the only way to get it is to demonstrate that sugar beets can and will be raised here. If you waDt a factory, start to get it now. Plant a small field of beets this spring, and get the hang of the business. Even if you don't ship to a factory you will find beets are an excellent food for stock, and some of I your neighbors wiil be glad to buy ihem. If every farmer will put in a few acres of beets this spring, and thereby show what this soil will produce, and then show a willingness to contract for a larger acreage, to a local factory you will get one. We all want such a factory j hut it is up to the farmers of Gunniaon valley to make the move which will bring it here. If a sugar factory is wanted, get busy. |
