Show Lincoln on "Joe" Heiskell. Sometimes, in dealing with the most serious matters, Abraham Lincoln brought into play a semi-facetous, sardonic sar-donic humor which was very effective for his purpose. Gov. Andrew Johnson John-son telegraphed as an interesting item of one of the Tennessee fights that the Confederate ex-Congressman "Joe Heiskell walked to meet" his uuion captors. Lincoln replied: "Executive Mansion, August 26, 1864. "Gov. Andrew Johnson, Nashville: "Thanks to Gen. Gillem for making the news, and also to you for sending it. Does Joe Heiskell's 'walking to meet us' mean any more than that Joe was scared and wanted to save his skin? A. LINCOLN." Lipplncott's Magazine. |
