Home' Is n Suicidal Poilcy , Not Wanted Here. The biggest event, in the history of Utah's industrial and commercial interests in-terests will be held from April 1 to 6. It will be known as "Utah Products Pro-ducts "Week." At that time It is intended in-tended to place before the public the products of the state in a manner that will impress the people with the great variety and high standard of local industries, thereby arousing deeper interest and more loyalty for their support. Every Important public pub-lic organization in: the- state is working work-ing in the movement. . Among these are the Utah Development League, the Salt Lake Commercial Club, the Manufacturers Association of Utah, the Native Sons of Utah, the Utah Home Industry Association, the Salt Lake Real Estate Association,, the Federated Trades, the Ad Club, Retail Re-tail Merchants, and the two Press associations. The plan of this campaign for business busi-ness reciprocity is as follows: It is desired that goods, wares and articles ar-ticles produced or manufactured in Utah shall be placed on exhibit in every city, and town of the state. This can be done by securing windows win-dows from . the local merchants. We believe that every one. of them will be willing to devote a portion of his window space for the purpose indi-I indi-I cated.. It. will help his business, help his city, his county and the 3tate. This campaign for Utah should appeal ap-peal to every person in the state, for it means something to every man. woman and child in this common-I common-I wealth. It is a suicidal policy to send money, abroad for anything that is raised or produced at home. The j community that is thus unwise can never nope lo ueeume uiimy. . iviuie than five hundred articles of every day use are .' manufactured in Utah to say nothin'srpf the numberless products of fanTv'-" orchard and garden, gar-den, range and pasture, mat are not considered in the manufacturing line. In:. every instance it will be found that all products of Utah compare favorably with the best from else-I else-I where. The quality is also as good i and many times better, while the I price is entirely competitive. This I being trite, the home industry phase should be a strong factor to induce home people to buy them. If more liberal patronage were given to the producers of this state, there used not be an idle person in Utah. Loyal support of industries already here will insuVe the establishment of others oth-ers so much needed. New concerns can scarcely be expected if old ones , are indifferently patronized. The suggestion to support home in-I in-I dustry should be followed, not merely i In theory, but In practice. The advice ad-vice is good for everybody and should ' not be considered as meaning only I the "other fellow." The success of one line of industry helps' every other line. It has been said that I, "he is a philanthropist who causes j two blades of grass to grow where but one grew before." What, tlien shall be said of the concern which is constantly adding to llie" number of I its employes and increasing its pay-! pay-! rolls? A house can he constructed, from foundation to chimney, of Utah materials, ma-terials, with the possible exception of glass. The interior can be largely large-ly provided with furnishings of local manufacture. In the matter of clothing, cloth-ing, each member of the family can secure nearly every necessary article ar-ticle of home make. It is, however, in ine wr;iy oi iouu-sluils luhl mis state excels. There are but few articles ar-ticles of necessity or of luxury that are not grown cr manufactured here. Pho l'st of Utah products are too numerous to be mentioned in this article ar-ticle and a comparative few are cited as an incentive for the consumer to learn more of the scope and variety of the state's resources. ''here are more than seven hundred hun-dred factories of one kind and another an-other in Utah, and there Is abundant opportunity or several times that number, in lines already partly ex-picked, ex-picked, and in others entirely new to this locality. It is no idle boast to say that r.ot another state in the Union equals Utah in the number and magnitude of natural resources. There are unlimited quantities of iron, coal, copper, lead, building stone of endless variety, including marble and onyx; crold, silica, silicon, gypsum, nitre, graphite, asphaltuni, tabbyite, elaterite, gilsonite, salt, sulphur; all the ingredients of cement, and other substances, of minor importance. We appeal to every citizen of Utah to give loynl support to "Utah Pro-i Pro-i ducts Week'' and to let that event be the beginning of a campaign that will know no cessation until whirling wheels of Industry shall be heard, in all parts of our fair state. |
