KniToit liinoiiAM Pii;i.i:i:: Yesterday J found amongst my paper mail a stranger, so to speak, but a warm welcome was given it and last midnight when 1 had rounded up the town, I picked it out lirst and carefully scanned its columns. I found in it most excellent ex-cellent reading and when I laid it down, I remarked to my oMiee eat that Tiik liitmiiA.a City' Pi't;u:i: is the best country paper in Utah and the people of that town should he proud of it. I have my ideas about running a newspaper, and what journalist has not, to say nothing of many other people who think they know more about how to run a paper than an editor! In my humble opinion, a country newspaper lias greater need of being brisk, sharp and strong than city papers. A metropolitan sheet may succeed and be more or less dry, prosy and lengthy, but the village paper must break forth with a blast every time it conies before the public. The crisper and brighter its contents, con-tents, the surer il. is of success. There is an art, not a lost one either, in editing country papers and allow a fellow knight of (he pencil, to say, Mr. Editor, and that without any thought of Uattery, that you, certainly have caught the spirit and comprehend the idea of running run-ning a country newspaper. As I glanced through Tiik Pi 01, nit last night I noticed thai lirigham City is improved and advanced ad-vanced to what the place was w hen I hist bad the pleasure of visiting within its gates, and I was moved upon by what I read to make, in the near future, another pilgrimage to your beautiful "City of Homes." You must have an industrious and temperate class of citizens in Brig-ham, Brig-ham, for I. notice that one saloon only is found in the town, though your population is quoted at 3,000. Tiik Huot,i:u has struck out on the right line in urging the esfab-, esfab-, lishment of water works, the build-ling build-ling of the motor line, the boring for gas, the promotion of industrial enterprises and in giving the inllu-ence inllu-ence of its encouragement and wisdom wis-dom to the progress and settlement of the place. That kind of a policy will win, for it is right, it is sensible, sen-sible, it is liberal, it is educative. Just this good wish, editorial friend, may Tub IJuui.ku continue lo blow Us clarion blast, sweet and strong, and be like a bugle in battle, the means of inspiring and leading the people on to worthy achievement, lo the living of happy, prosperous lives. Yours, Fraternally, Mn.o Zir. Ogden, Jan. 10th, 1S02. |
