Show LONDON'S DREADFUL FOCS. The Atmosphere Almost Thick Enough ti Slice. London, Nov. 11. Dense fogs have been prevalent in London for a week. At noon today the atmosphere became thicker than ever and with the blackness of midnight. Gas and electric lights were in use everywhere, but in the street their rays were unable to penetrate the dense mass of vapor. The fog has penetrated the most tightl' closed houses everywhere and caused a feeling of discomfort. On the streets pedestrians stumbled along, often 1 unwarily getting bad falls by missing their footing in the almost Cimmerian darkness. The usual roar of traffic is greatly diminished, for many careful drayman and others have refused to allow their horses to be used, fearing accident. Trafiic is carried on under great difficulties, and it was only by the exercise of the greatest care the accidents ac-cidents were not more numerous, though some serious casualties are reported, mostly run-overs. The. lawless element took advantage of the occasion and ever where were active. It is utterly impossible for the police to recognize them, and the dense fog has rendered the robbing an easy task. In spite of J the precautions of shopkeepers I who have learned nuieh bv experience experi-ence in fuggy weather, sncnkthh'ves have manag'-d to make many successful suc-cessful coups. Several eases of highway robbery are also reported and in every ease the thieves es-. es-. coped under cover of the mantle of the fog. It is feared that many fatalities will occur at the docks, which are veritable death traps in swh weather. |
