Two of the great annual an-nual appropriation bills necessary to the maintenance of the federal government govern-ment failed of passage on March 4, when the Sixty-second congress wound up its affairs. Senator Fall of New Mexico, holding hold-ing the floor through the closing hours of the session, talked the Indian appropriation ap-propriation to death, with its $12,000,-000 $12,000,-000 for the Bupport of the Indian service, serv-ice, while President Taft wrote hia veto on the $115,000,000 bill to take-care take-care of the "sundry civil -expenses" of the government. The house repassed the sundry civil bill over the veto, but when it reached the senate, Senator Poindexter objected ob-jected to any appropriation for the Washington police force unless an investigation in-vestigation had been made of thfv riotous scenes attending the suffrage parade Monday, and the senate did: not vote on the bill. Mr. Taft vetoed the sundry civil bill . because of its provision exempting labor unions and farmers' organiza-t'.ons organiza-t'.ons from prosecution under the antitrust anti-trust law. Most of the appropriations would take no effect until July 1, however, how-ever, and the new congress can prepare pre-pare appropriation measures by then.. |
