Courage of Passengers and Crew Praised by Suivors, Who Say Band Was Playing "Nearer, My God, to Thee" as Ship Sank. New York. So far as the loss of life as the result of the sinking of the Titanic is concerned, the first reports re-ports seem to have been nearly correct. cor-rect. There were but few additions addi-tions to the roll of saved. Sixteen, hundred and one lives were lost as a result of tho Titanic's collision col-lision with an iceberg at 11:45 p. ai., Sunday, April 14. Of the Titanic's 330 first cabin passengers, 210 were saved; of the 320 second cabin passengers, pas-sengers, 125 were saved; of the 750 third class passengers, 200 were saved, while 210 of the 940 officers andv crew were saved. Captain Smith was on the bridge a moment after the Titanic struck the Iceberg. He summoned all on board to put on life-preservers and ordered the lifeboats to be lowered. The first boat had more male passengers, passen-gers, as they were the first to reach the deck. When the rush of frightened fright-ened men and women and crying children chil-dren to the decks began the "women first" rule was enforced. Officers drew revolvers, but in most cases there was no use for them. Captain Smilh was last seen on the bridge just before the ship sank, leaping only after the decks had been washed away. What became of the men with life-preservers was the (luestion asked by many since the disaster. dis-aster. Many of those with lil'e-preser vers were seen to go down despite the preservers, and dead hodieH floated on the surface as the last boats moved away. It is said positively the ship's string band gathered in the saloon near the end and played "Nearer, My God, to Thee." |
