Show FIRST QPtHING OF SCHOOL AT CLARION. Clarion, Oct. 23.-. . Sunday last marked an event in this Jewish colony, of historic value, pertaining per-taining to education. It was-the rejoicing- over the opportunity of a public school, tube opened for the first time here the next day . A number num-ber of visitors were present by invitation invita-tion from Gunnison and Centerlield, the new school building being tilled to its capacity and the meeting one of deep interest. Secretary Shein of the colony's organization directed the exercises, and in his opening address touched chiefly upon the advantages of children child-ren in the country schools over those in the crowded districts in the east. Professor Swart., one of the prime movers in establishing the colony, also al-so spoke besides the following visitors: Secretary Joseph Christenson of the School board at Gunnison, which embraces em-braces Clarion. Judge A.N.Cherry, and Charles il. Embley ol Centerlield, who has charge of the school, (.'losing (.'los-ing the exercises Professor Swart, led the children in singing "America," during which Mayor Christenson of Gunnison raised the stars and stripes over the new school building;, a ceremony cere-mony that was most impressive. The building movided for holding s.hool is a two-room structure, with ' basement for installing a plant for j the heating-. It rellects much credit on the community here and the congratulations con-gratulations given on this occasion were truly gratifying. HRIEFS. School opened Monday, with an en- enrollment of 27 pupils under instruction instruc-tion of C. H. Embley of Centerlield. President Brown is in Salt Lake, transacting business for the colony. Harvesting is still in progress, keeping keep-ing our people quite busy. The potato pota-to crop is of excelleut quality and yielding quite well. i One of the greatest of Jewish holidays holi-days is being observed here today, and will last until the morning of Friday. The event commemorates the fifty-second fifty-second reading of the Jewish Bible, and is viewed as an essential rite by this people, so much so that such of the children who are permitted by their parents to attend school this holiday do so under the sacred instruction in-struction not to do writing of any kind. |
