Show A Corner In Candles. As an example of trusts and monopolies monop-olies prevalent even in that early day it may be mentioned that in 1750 one Benjamin Crabb obtained the exclusive exclus-ive right to make sperm candles in Massachusetts for 14 years. A year later, however, a factory was started in Providence, R. I., and within with-in the decade there were eight factories fac-tories in New England and one in Philadelphia. Their output greatly reduced re-duced the price of candles, which not long before sold for five shillings a pound. In those days $1.25 was worth fully three times as much as it is now. j From the Designer. |
