Show green G r MA deml river R i ia V afe d youth T aff 0 uth aa FU tu el M ly M dounar d e d T wo I 1 tw U ill co mm S E cape U y extensive damage to mine buildings result of dynamite explosion deuard cox 14 year old green siver river youth was fatally wounded ast last sunday february when line nine sticks of dynamite exploded which he had detonated with a truck battery it was reported by emery bounty county don kofford the explosion occurred sunday afternoon about 23 miles south of green river on the old hanksville Hanks ville oad road deuard cox and two compan ons ions bradley gines guies and john den us nis after hauling trash had proceed ed to the black panther mine bated on the san raefel river just off the hanksville Hanks ville road in a jeep pickup pick up truck belonging to deuard s father it was reported that the youths found approximately 23 cases of dy at the mine and after setting off four different charges and doing extensive damage to several build ings at the mine they loaded nine cases in the pick up and drove over to fhe old hanksville Hanks ville road and stop ped by an old drilling casing deuard cox told his two companions that he would show them how to make ke rings come out of the pipe it w was s r reported he then placed nine sticks of dynamite in the pipe and detonated them with the jeep batt ery the other boys ran up a near by embankment the explosion shattered the pipe and deuard cox was fatally injured by flying shrapnel the other two boys assuming that deuard was still alive ran to a nearby mining camp and secured help sherriff kofford who investigated the accident strongly urged that all mining pers onel and others who han die dle dynamite should keep their sup P ply ly of dynamite and caps stored un der lock and key and that the two should be stored in se places he also stated that all parents sh warn their children about the danger of playing with dynamite or caps |
