Show e t to m H U e C aw P t MI IR y D M aff wee e aimie W dunalp alae L believed to have been started by A gas lantern in kitchen fire completely destroyed the ve I 1 tere home on saturday february 11 at approximately 6 30 p m lack of water prevented saving the house and it burned to the ground however the furniture was salvaged the fire was believed to have been started by a gas lantern mr and mrs john vetere are liv ing in green river this winter while their son john vetere jr was liv ing alone in the house and was re ported to have lighted a gas lantern and built a fire in the kitchen stove before going outside to care for the stock the fire had gotten well un derway when he returned to the hou se and found it enveloped in flames the vetere s had no phone and in order for john to call for help he went to his neighbors mr jess po ell and called the fire truck the truck arrived at the scene in a very short time but the water tank only holds gallons of water the ve tere s cistern contained only gal ions and by the time stewart wil son could fill his water truck and reach the fire the house was demol dished the water from the wilson wilsons s truck was used to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings the house was covered by a small amount of insurance but not nearly enough to cover the loss it was reported relloyd hatt fire chief stated hat that he felt they could have saved two wo rooms and the porch if the cis tern ern had been full the hose on the fire truck had to extend down about 14 feet and the pump is powered to extend only 6 or 8 feet there is an appropriation to enlarge the capacity of of the the water tank to gallons mr hatt went on to urge every person who has a cistern to keep it full through the winter months while there in no water in the irn gation ditch because it might very likely save a home from total de st ruction |
