Show Taft And Lane IT is almost laughable to read that possibly the president is considering whether to appoint Mr. Lane or Mr. Taft to the place made vacant by the death of Chief Justice Lamar of the su- H preme bench. H If a North Carolina pulling bee was on, the H effort would be to get Percheron, or Shire or H Clydesdale horses. If a four-mile race was to H be decided some descendants of old Boston or H Lexington or Australian or some other blood H horse would be sought for. Mr. Taft and Mr. Lane H are both great lawyers and most able men. Mr. H Taft has a purely judicial mind. Mr. Lane is an H impetuous, fiery man of intense prejudices. The H two men should never be discussed in connec- H tion with the same office. They are no more in common than is a rapid-fire gun and a trench H howitzer. 'H |
