Show The Lid On In Idaho A GENTLEMAN who is entirely reliable tells us that a man in Idaho, some months since, was found with a bottle of beer in his possession. He was arrested, arraigned and convicted. The law of Idaho makes that offense punishable by a term in the penitentiary. The victim appealed, and the supreme court has just handed down an opinion that the law is constitutional. Of course such a law subjects a druggist to a like penalty if liquor, wines or beer are found in his store. This makes it impossible for a druggist to fill a prescription if any liquor is included with the" pj other compounds. The passage of such a law Is prima facia conviction of lunacy on the part of the people and their representatives. The experiment experi-ment of such a law will have the effect, in a few years of filling the state with liars, sneaks and people indifferent to righteous laws and with a contempt for a government that passes and enforces such a law, for when the personal liberty of men is throttled and disregarded, it does not require any great length of time for men to become incendiaries in thought and scrubs and sneaks and criminals in act. |
