Show Smoke from the Weekly Pipe That is a pretty story regarding Mrs. Idu Paul, the wife of a iarmer at Ucon, Idaho, who it is said lost the sight of an eye at Holy CrosB 'hospital on Novemher twenty-sixth when a nurse washed it with carholic acid Instead of olive oil. After ether is administered, olive oil is sometimes some-times used in the eyes of the patient and how it was possible for anyone to mistake carbolic acid for olive oil is beyond comprehension. Mr. Paul stated that he did not care to discuss the matter because a satisfactory settlement had been made so that the affair might not become public." It is nice to know that the operation the lady underwent was a complete success even if she did lose her eye while unconscious. Of course, accidents will happen, but this seems to be the most flagrant case of gross carelessness that has been heard of in a hospital for sometime, some-time, in fact since one of the hospitals let a patient fall down stairs nearly killing him and settling for twelve thousand dollars so that the public might not know, and in one other instance where a near surgeon sewed a gentleman up neglecting to remove some of the instruments he used irom the place in the gentleman where he was operating. , It is a gay life in the hospitals around here, and apparently none of them are any too strict in demanding high qualifications from attendants. There ought to bo a law making it compulsory for public institutions of this character to report to the proper authorities anything of the kind that might happen. Of course, the damage could not be corrected but such reports might lead to remedial legislation that would remove some of the terrors from the hearts of the afflicted who necessarily have to take a chance in going to one of those places. Salt Lake City and the Union Association owes a larger debt of gratitude to Maury R. Evans than it can very well pay. Mr. Evans left here for Boise on Sunday night and on Tuesday wires were received to the effect that negotiations negotia-tions were practically completed whereby the Boise franchise in the association and the ball park at Boise will be transferred to Mr. Evans, the final details to be closed here. Mr. Evans was accompanied by Dr. Harville, who Is behind the Murray club. Mr. Evans recently re-cently agreed to put up $2,000 in cash to assure Boise to the league. Wo wanted and needed Boise in the league and it is doubtful if it would have been possible to get it had not Mr.Evans been willing to come forward with the money at the same time giving his time and attention as he always has done to the furthering of the interests of the association. m The matter of the discussion of the competency com-petency or incompetency of Coach Bennlon at the university which is taking so much space in Salt Lake's "only independent journal" at the present time is another laughing matter. It is easy to prove by the files of Goodwin's Weekly that it was the first paper to have the courage to call attention to the real trouble in the University Uni-versity football team and it was not until two or three weeks later that the story "broke" in the Telegram. The publication of it there followed fol-lowed a general discussion which ensued arter the Weekly article was published and now as is the wont of the "independent journal" it was responsible re-sponsible for the whole thing.
