Show SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SAVED i I In five years' time in Salt Lake City, practically unaided by a public that prides itself that Salt Lake "la , a musical center," the Symphony Orchestra is now in a position where $& it is only about a thousand dollars in debt. "When it is taken into consideration considera-tion that cities only from two to three j times as large as this put up fifty ' thousand dollars p, year for the inain- j tenance of a symphony orchestra, I and that it is like pulling the pro verbial molars to drag money out of the cultured in this city, this is a re-! re-! markable record. Of the patrons and patronesses mentioned when the Symphony Orchestra Or-chestra first came into existence, the ' 'v- extent of their contributions was about ten dollars apiece or two dol-I dol-I lars a year apiece for five years, and ! since the very beginning the orches- ' tra, in spite of its excellence, has had a struggle, and this in face of the fact that many of those principally I interested have given their time and j services absolutely free. 1 Mr. McClellan, for. instance, has never received a cent for his work in connection with the orchestra, and there are others who could be nimed who have been equally generous. Mr. John D. Spencer has been unceasing un-ceasing in his efforts to make it a great success, and to his tireless energy en-ergy is due much of whatever suc-( suc-( cess the orchestra has had. Only recently re-cently a subscription list has been started in order to maintain and perfect per-fect this organization. It has neen headed by Mr. M. H. Walker with a hundred dollar contribution, uud he has named ten other gentlemen who . have agreed to put up a like sum. For the remainder of the subscriptions subscrip-tions everyone interested in the excellent ex-cellent organization is asked to contribute con-tribute any sum they may care to, i from one hundred dollars to a dollar, and in that way there can be no ex-i ex-i cuse for failure. The thing for those who profess to be interested in the advancement of high class music in this city to do is to volunteer their subscriptions immediately, im-mediately, without being personally i solicited or approached in any way. |
