Show EVERY CONTACT AN opportunity I 1 J E halverson Ha luerson gives interesting te talk friday evening before turn turning ing over the kiwanis presidents button to leroy B young his successor past president J E halverson made an extremely interesting presentation speech the text of which follows president roy Ki and fellow Kiwan ians someone has stated that every contact is is an opportunity and we of kiwanis know this is true each of us have individual problems but kiwanis has taught us that it is a very grave mistake i to become so absorbed in ones business or studies as to be ba almost unconscious of the lives of others I 1 am not unmindful of the scriptural injunction that whatsoever thy hand finds to do that do with all thy might mind and strength and this is not without its virtue and I 1 remember too the injunction that no man ligh teth a candle and put it under a bushel but on a candle stick and it light to all that are in the house let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works this is kiwanis we must acquire the habit of doing good for the common welfare and of doing it NOW and now signifies the most vital period of all time the magic of success lies in that little word so important is action that it is better to blunder while trying to do cur best than noi not to attempt to do anything at all anybody who really will do something in the future will be found doing a little something NOW inaction in a deed of mercy becomes action in a deadly sin he who puts his hand to the small work now shall grasp the great task later as certainly as he lives and thinks each is exactly what he makes himself and gets precisely what he earns not a jot less or more someone has said the inner courtesy is is born of a real regard for the welfare of others it 11 is not difficult to find the unfortunate they are everywhere when one begins to observe more and more the life problems of others and the difficulties with which these are beset and as he be looks and listens his sympathies grow strong those about us are literally ourselves in other forms we are individuals divi duals and yet we are one the fingers are separate yet one in consciousness ness so that one of them cannot suffer without affecting the on one e consciousness ness that affects all the good and the bad strength and weakness are mingled in all nothing is worth while that does not in some way pro mote the welfare of people or g things it is an extremely important thing to remember that we can get help only as we deserve it and we dese deserve it only in proportion that we give it the things that are really worth while in life come to us not by grasping but by giving no person cart can get something for nothing nor get help without helping one grows most when the life streams run through him to others and president roy in the derbidge vcr ver bidge of your profession one who ho seeks ito to have and to hold is like a pond without an outlet covered with the green scum of impurity he represents stagnation one who receives and gives again is like a lake from which springs a noble stream to quench the thirst of parching fields beyond it is to the pond what sunshine is to shadow what health is to disease the pond is not without a certain phase of life its putrid waters swarm with myriads of vermin and from its filthy depths arises the contagion of deadly fevers it is a noxious sort of life the individual life turned inward upon itself life and activity are inseparable the ocean is the antithesis of the stagnant pond all that the ocean receives from the countless rivers it gives back to the skies the gifts it receives from the land are purified and return ed the miserly pond becomes stagnant nant in a week the generous ocean never to set aside some part of ones time for the deliberate cultivation of human sympathy to radiate the sunshine of life and to take thought of the welfare of others and to become practically helpful to them is to imitate at least in some degree the life and work of the master and this is kiwanis As retiring president it gives me great pleasure to attach this small emblem to your coat lapel we wish you god speed you have outlined to the club a most ambitious program we know your heart and soul is in kiwanis hold its banner in the light and carry on |
