Show college opportunity for farm boys over 7 per cent ot of the freshmen freshman reporting in one state several years ago made their choice of 0 college because ot of the opportunity afforded for self support during the course college authorities have long sought ways and means to assist deserving young men and women to obtain an education A plan proposed by the state normal college at bowling green ohio has recently been reported to the bureau ot of education tentative arrangements subject to legislative approval provide part time employment inot for or a limited number farm arm boys enrolling in the agriculture science course for rural high school not smith hughes teachers the students alternate by periods ot of three weeks between tait 16 college and assigned farms arms this procedure continues tor for tour four years ten months per year the students are assigned for or one year to the cooperating larmer farmer so that one student Is at the college all the time and one with the farmer all the ume time the farmer pays a reasonable wage tor for his help at the close ot of each year the students are assigned to farmers in other localities to give them the business methods and viewpoints of other farmers and communities muni ties the class work Is correlated with the farm activities tor for each three weeks period the farm thus serves as a practical laboratory tor for the course and at the same time aids the student to meet his college expenses five years are required to complete the course with a B S degree the fifth year is spent in full time residence at the college doing practice teaching and college work |
