Show MR. BARRETTE'S RESIGNATION. H The resignation of W. J. Barrette as corpora- M tion counsel for Salt Lake, furnished the sensation fl of the week politically. There has been consider- fl able speculation in the press as to whether or not M the resignation was the result of trouble between M the attorney and the commission, but among those who know the former best, it is the consensus of opinion that Mr. Barrotte's decision to resume his practice came after two or three weeks of M work which was piling up so fast that consider- M ing the remuneration, the game was scarcely fl Worth the candle. fl Probably the most amusing feature of the whole business is the attitude of the Sraoot organ, M which, in the course of its continent on the change, is persistently pointing out how economically the H American administration handled the city's affairs and how extravagant the commission is proving to M It is strange with what ease that journal has H flopped in a period of a little over a month. No- M body knew before that it was in favor of tho Am- H erican administration, but now that it has shown H Its hand, there is a lurking1 suspicion that that H accounts for the defeat of the American party at H the recent election. M In the appointment of C. S. Varlan as corpora- H tion counsel, the commission has shown a sign of life that is truly refreshing. Mr. Varlan is H a splendid lawyer and in the capacity of legal H adviser for Salt Lake City will All tho office with B honor to himself and to the benefit of the city. H It is to be hoped that he will not be hampered H in his work by any of the commissioners. But, H come to think of it, should L. be interfered with, H w e believe we are safe in saying that the cotamis- H sion will again find itself confronted with the ne- H cessity of again appointing an attorney for the H |
