Show 9 Political Notes. H J. D. Skeen is making another effort to purify H the rotten condition of civic affairs in Weber Hj county and Ogden, and, while he has the back- H jug and moral support of the best people of that B county and city, the local organ of Apostle Reed H Smoot is sneering at him, and is engaged in a H palpable attempt to influence Judge Howell of H the Second district to throw Mr. Skeen's charges IB against Chief of Police Browning out of court H without giving them a hearing. H In most states the editor of a newspaper which would attempt to influence a judge would be sent to jail for contempt of court, and jail is the place for such an editor. Judge Howell, however, has passed by without notice a more serious at-tempt at-tempt than this one to dictate his judicial acts, and it is not to be expected that he will cite the ' editor of the Inter-Mormon into court, whan he lot "Bill" Spry and Attorney-General Breoden go 1 scot free. H In this connection comes an interesting rumor that Judge Howell aspires to a nomination for fl the supreme bench two years hence. If he se-cures se-cures such a nomination it will come at the hands of the political machine with which the Ogden grafters, whom Mr. Skeen is trying to punish, IB are identified. It would be better, therefore, if IB Judge Howell would call In an outside judge IB rass upon all matters connected with the Ogden IB graft prosecutions, especially in view qf the fact KB that machine newspapers and politicians seem to feel free to make the most brazen attempts to influence in-fluence his conduct in connection with such cases. & & It is interesting to know that Governor Cutler still retains, in his oflTcial family one of the Ogden Og-den men who was convicted by a jury, of his peers with receiving foes illegally as a cLty councilman, whose conviction was affirmed by the supreme court of the state, and who was ousted from the office of councilman as a result Reference is made to Fred W. Chambers, who Is a member of the board of trustees for the deaf, dumb and blind school at Ogden, which is a state institution. institu-tion. Common decency would dictate .that, If Chambers did not resign from this petition, the governor should remove his summarily. The people peo-ple of the state are not satisfied that a man convicted con-victed of spending their money illegally and for his own gain should disburse state funds. tjC The Inter-Mormon's hostility to Chief Justice WIlliam-'Mr McQarty -li cropping out again, although al-though last summer the Republican state central committee called that sheet down for its attacks on the" judge. IrTan Editorial Thursday morning, the. Inter-Mormon- said: "And we believe we express the sound judgment judg-ment of the people of the state when we say that J. M. Tnner- measures head and shoulders above at least one man who has occupied a position of that bench." Judge W. M. McCarty was twice elected to the district bench in southern Utah. He was elevated to the supreme bench, and enjoys the respect and the confidence of the bar of Utah that is of the reputable portion of the bar. J. M. Tanner was removed from the presidency presi-dency of the state agricultural college because of a fear that his being a polygamous Mormon would cause the Federal government to withdraw its support from- that institution. Later he wa dropped from a high position In the Mormon church because of a public exposure that he had taken at least one plural wife after the manifesto. And yet an imported editor from Indiana has the temerity to insult the supreme court of this state by declaring that such a man is superior to a judge who has 'occupied a seat on that when every judge who has ever sat upon it has been a man beyond suspicion either in honesty or morals. jfi & J It is semi-officlally announced that on its first anniversary, February 12, 1907, the Inter-Mormon will change its name. The "Inter-Mountain" will be dropped, and thereafter it will blaspheme the name of the' Grand Old Party by pimply calling ing itself "The Republican." The nick-name "Inter-Mormon," universally given the sheet, is-the is-the cause of the prospective change. i |
