Show Passing Chimes. By Jamoa Barton Adams. A BELLE OF THE RANGE. Wiry as a mountain cat, Graceful as a waving willow, Hair beneath her cowboy hat Bunched up in a gold billow. Eyes alive with jolly snap, Fringed with silken drooping lashes, Sunny smile that would entrap Anybody in its meshes, And a laugh that seemed to be Made of liquid harmony. Always up before tho sun Hustling 'round tho ranch and singing With the little birds that spun 'Round her in their merry winging. She would trill a sonnet gay, Then the joalous birds would meet it With another, as if they Half imac'nod they could boat it. Often thought the feathored things Wondered why she hadn't wings. Ought to see the daisy ride On a broncho! Hit the saddle With a grace she couldn't hide A la clothespin d'astraddle. Touch the critter with the spur, And there wa'n't a flying swallow That could keep In sight of her Over swale and buff'lo wallow As she darted like a bird Circling 'round the longhorn herd. . Wa'n't a rider anywhere On tho range could beat her pitching Tho riata; you would staro With surprise to see her hitching Onto steers 1 She'd never miss; Sent the rope like wave lightning, And 'twould give a sort o' hiss With the strain when it was tight'ning, And tho stroor would hit tho grass Wondoring that had come to pass! I was captured by hor style, By her crude but winning bearing, By the sunshine of hor smile, By hor actions bold and daring, Yet, though near hor every day Through my whole vacation soason, I was Shy Of dashing May For quite a sufllolont reason She'd a cowboy follow who Modsurod six foot ono or two! Rhodo Island ministers are discussing tho question ques-tion whether the whnlo swallowed Jonah or gave him deck passage ashore on its back. A man in Ohio tolls of a battle ho had with onraged blacksnakos that bound him with thoir coils to a tree and boat him with thoir tails. It is painfully evident that tho pure food laws as applied to red licker are not yet being enforced in his locality. "April showers bring May flowers," (How smoothly flows the couplet's rhythm), But when late froBts of April sting Tho flowers it plays the mischief wythm! An Indiana base ball league has barred profanity pro-fanity from the diamond, but the bleacherltos will see that the supply is kept fully up to tho demand. |
