Show Passing Chimes By James Barton Adams. PASSING CHIMES. (By James Barton Adams.)' The Old Cider Press. There's a host of memories clinging to Llie days of long ago When the clear skies of our boyhood seldom knew a cloud of woe, .When, in ever-buoyant . spirits, lithe of limb and strong of arm, ' We were kr n for play or labor on the old back . yonder farm. And there's one dear recollection comes with autumn au-tumn every year; When the frost was in the orchard and we every . . day could hear Groans and screeches from the old mill like 'twas crying in distress, And could see the sweet juice dripping from the old cider press. With a wheat straw, long and golden, we would get down on' our knees At the catch-tub to the music ot the humming of the bees, And would suck the juicy nectar till our swollen stomachs told Not another little swallow could they comfortably comfort-ably hold. Talk about ambrosial sweetness of the nectar of of the. gods, . Talk about the wines of friars that the poet often lauds; j Every epicure that tastes it is quite willing to confess . There is nothing like the drippings from- the old cider press. ; I I I I I When at many a corner grocery we have seen the sign displayed: "Genuine Sweet Apple Cider Kind Your Good Old Daddy Made," We have felt that if our muscles yet retained the power of youth We'd rebuke the soulless dealers who thu& monkeyed mon-keyed with the truth. And a flood of recollections would come trooping to the brain, Plashing pictures that would start tbe soul to yearning once again For a long and golden, wheat straw and a flooding to excess Of the Innards at the catch-tub of the old cider press. "Does Governor Hoch of JKansas wear Pop whiskers?" asks an exchange. He may have formerly for-merly done so, but he had a close shave last election. & & "Why do society writers always say "the bride was led to the altar"?, asks a Philadelphia paper. Perhaps because they , never, see one drlv-.on.or drlv-.on.or dragged to the altar. Thanksgiving turkey should taste exceedingly .good to fellows who have been dining on crow since election. A New YorV -woman .threw down a burly - burglar and sat on him until the police came. Her weight l.not given, but It seems to have been sufficient. |
